IUD Coil

I've had the IUD Copper Coil (http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/contraception-guide/Pages/iud-coil.aspx) form of contraception since January this year, when I had the procedure done it was extremely painful but I laughed my way threw up! However, this has some how caused a slight phobia of "getting checked" or any of the kind.

I need to get it removed because I've been menstruating for over 2 months and have aches and pains almost everyday. I've visited the doctors on numerous occasions where they have suggested Hormonal pills (The whole reason I went on the Copper Coil was so no hormones where being pumped into my body!), additionally I left the doctors too scared to even bring up the idea of having it removed.
I've tried taking beta-blockers to calm my nerves, I've tried meditating, self-assurance, dissociation but my biological self just winces away whenever the doctors even talks about internal examination.

Also, if I have the coil removed then I have no form of contraception, I've used 'the pill' and the 'implant' before and the hormones just change my body more than they're supposed to.

Any suggestions?
Much appreciated!

Hi lilyalic

From my experience with a coil it sounds like your body could be trying to reject it. After all it is a foreign body and it is natural for your womb to try and expel it. Yes they will offer you hormones as they do.....The coil is also an irritant to the womb to prevent Implantation.

You are in a dilemma as you want to avoid pregnancy.

Be careful that you dont develop an infection, it is prudent that you get a sympathetic female (hopefully) doctor to investigate. It could affect your future fertility if you dont.

In my case the pain would radiate down my legs making it painful to walk. My doctor looked at me blankly. I later insisted that it be removed and the doctor mentioned that indeed it was nearly out.....through the neck of my womb! The relief was immense.

Listen to your body as we often know the answer ourselves.

Best wishes

That sounds awful! My pain is mostly in my abdomen and in the centre of my back (Short sharp pains and deep aches) I've had it checked twice a few months ago and they said it was fine! (After much battle haha!)
I think the best idea is to get it out and the relief you felt has made me even more determined to have it removed!

Does it hurt as much getting it removed as it did having it put in place?

Thank you for your advice!

Apparently Women react differently to removal in my case it was not painful. Do some research on the web and come to your own conclusion. All the best. ;)

If the coil is causing difficult menstruation and it hurts, I'd get rid of it.

Why not use condoms?
