Jackie and Shadow Bald Eagle cam

Evan

The Living Force
This pair lives up in our local mountains near Big Bear Lake. Jackie is a 13 year old bald eagle. Her mate Shadow lives in a Jeffrey Pine nearby. It’s something of a local pastime for us to spy on them. As of today (March 1, 2025), we are officially on pip-watch. Jackie laid a clutch of three eggs in the last week of January, so fingers crossed we’ll have eaglets any day now!

Update March 2: One chick has officially left the egg and is quite vocal! The second is currently breaking open its shell. It was visible just before midnight, so expect images and possibly a video as the morning progresses. After last year’s failed clutch this is exciting, wonderful news for the thousands watching and waiting! I’ll post when they do.😊

And we have pips!! You’ll notice that for most of the video, Shadow is tending the nest. The easiest way to tell them apart is that the female Jackie has a spot above her right brow. She’s also the bigger of the two, though that’s somewhat difficult to discern on camera.

After 3 failed eggs last year, we have the most wonderfully (and statistically unlikely) successful clutch of 3 this year! Watch closely as pip number 3 pokes its little egg tooth out this morning!
Well, thanks to you there are a few more consciences watching this nest.

Maybe that has something to do with it...

In any case, it's fantastic to see it.

That is such a kind and thoughtful thing to say. I do hope it resonates. I was watching them being fed (fresh fish right out of the lake from day one!), and I’m calling the first one Piggy, because despite mom’s patience, it keeps pushing number two aside and gorging itself!😂 Number three continues chipping away at its shell. It’s quite addicting to watch! It’s currently raining down here, so up in Big Bear mom is once again blanketed in snow. Fortunately Shadow is bringing her their daily fish. Sushi for all!

I was worried when I saw all that snow this morning. I do hope the babies are going to be safe.
Oh not to worry. It’s like 30 degrees warmer in mommy’s fluff. Shadow did daddy duty for 45 minutes this afternoon so Jackie could stretch her wings. When the eaglets are feeding, they’re very active, but it only lasts about 15 minutes before mom plops down on top of them.
