Yeah, saw this a short while ago. He said that he punched the shark on the back. He did get whacked in the "chops" with the board by the shark though. Good thing that help arrived as quickly as it did. He should just pack in this surfing malarkey since he's already a champion, best in the world, & apparently a legend. How many chances will a person get from nature? I would take it as a sign.

Now that is something that you don't see every day!
He is one lucky dude.
Layne Beachley, who is a seven time world surfing champion, said that it is so rare to see sharks while surfing, that in all the years that she was surfing, she never saw any.
Dolphins and whales yes, but no sharks.
Then again, sharks don't need to come up for air, so they only make their presence felt when they are feeding.
Mick's ankle rope was bitten off. That was a close one. Tell that to the grand-kids.

Maybe he's as good as he is because he just enjoys surfing a lot? I think quitting because of one freak shark appearance is making an availability bias, cognitively speaking.

but as whitecoasts is saying there are no second chances in life that happened very often, besides what else is there for him to accomplish,, he's already a champion, and best in the world. if I were him I would choose another type of water sport.... my two cents... :cool2:

Maybe the shark was there because of changing of temperatures in the water? And in general sharks are not aggressive.
