June 3, 2007 -- The defining moment for the alleged ringleader in the foiled plot to obliterate a swath of Queens came as Russell Defreitas was working at JFK Airport.
The Guyana native, who moved to the United States some 40 years ago, spied military parts being shipped to Israel while working as a cargo handler, according to the federal criminal complaint.
The sight of the components, which included missiles, filled him with rage because he assumed they would be used to kill his fellow Muslims, he allegedly told an FBI informant.
He was also enraged by Israel's war against Hezbollah last year in Lebanon because he felt the world gave Jews a "pass."
Consequently, he was determined "to do something to get those bastards," according to the complaint.
That "something" was calculated to kill thousands and make his workplace a charred thing of the past.
As a U.S. citizen who had lived among Americans for decades, he had a unique insight into the enemy's psyche.
He promised, according to the complaint, that a hit on JFK would devastate Americans who fondly remembered the days of John F. Kennedy's presidential "Camelot."
He assured his cohorts that the attack would wreak havoc on the country's economy. He was even busted Friday at a diner, one of the quintessential icons of Americana, after a salmon dinner.
His waitress at Brooklyn's Lindenwood Diner said Defreitas seemed "very polite" until he shortchanged her on the check - and didn't leave a tip.
The feds charge that he linked up with Abdul Kadir, Abdel Nur and Kareem Ibrahim.
Like Defreitas, Kadir and Nur are from Guyana.
Kadir, a former member of the parliament in that Caribbean country, was busted in Trinidad with Ibrahim.
Kadir's wife, Isha Kadir, told The Associated Press that her husband was on his way to Iran - for a religious conference - when he was busted.
"We have no interest in blowing up anything in the U.S.," Isha Kadir said. "We have relatives in the U.S."
The wife said her husband knew Nur in the '80s, but, "we have not seen him for a long time and I would be surprised if my husband has any links with him still."
Nur is on the lam. He is described by feds as having strong ties to Jamaat al Muslimeen, a Muslim group in Trinidad.
In Taguariga, Trinidad, Ibrahim's neighbors told The Post they don't buy the feds' terror allegations.
"What, that old man is a terrorist? I don't believe that," said Anthony Smith, who owns a shop across the street. "That man is a good man. He is a community leader."
Pointing to Ibrahim's weather-beaten roof, Smith said, "If he had money, don't you think he would have repaired the roof? He would not be looking to buy a ticket to go to New York."
