There is yet another self-styled enlightenment-guru-with a messianic complex going around helping people to see the light!!
His name is John de Ruiter and he is best known in Edmonton, Canada where he gives his, er - talks, to people looking for spiritual direction.

You'll know him by his fruits: here is a story about JDR starting a relationship with two women, who are actually sisters (!) and his poor wife having to deal with it.
_http://www3.telus.net/public/sarlo/Yjohn.htm

and here is a spot-on observation from his ex-wife which includes another observation about how he holds sway over people:
_http://guruphiliac.blogspot.com/2006/04/homegrown-guru-freaks-out-edmonton.html

"Critical thinking is the first thing to go, and the last thing one realizes has left," says [his ex-wife.] "Critical thinking was discouraged. Since most of the discussion is based on abstract theology and constructs, there really is hardly any way to disprove or prove any of it.

That sounds like a grade A m******k to us. Cult expert and long time deRuiter critic Steven Kent sure thinks so:

"The silence enables the followers to attribute superhuman status to de Ruiter," he says. "They create their own illusion of him during these times. He says something esoteric and the silence gives them time to reinterpret it in ways specifically relevant to the particular needs that they have.

"I also noticed it being used as a punitive function. Someone would challenge John or call him out on these esoteric things and say, 'Please explain this, I don't know what it means.'

"Then he would remain silent and he would glare. And if the person in the chair breaks down and starts pleading for answers, then it becomes a demonstration to everyone in the room that wow, this guy is amazing and powerful."

As always, it seems that having some ability to hypnotize one's followers, and remain vague enough to "help" people disengage themselves from their critical faculties, comes into play.

I had the opportunity to listen to a talk by de Ruiter called "What is Evil?" Here are my impressions:

He talks a lot, but says nothing at all of any real substance. As his ex-wife wrote in the quote, "most of the discussion is based on abstract theology and constructs, there really is hardly any way to disprove or prove any of it." This was my exact impression on listening. He basically rambles on and on with abstract, 'fuzzy' concepts (word salad) with virtually no practical advice that has anything to do with what the people asking him questions are actually experiencing. It was really sad to listen to. Here are people who are obviously suffering, asking for advice on what to do, and all he answers is along the lines of, "You simply have to be who you really are. When you're being who you really are, in a true way, you are who you really are." He talks in circles, sometimes contradicting himself, sometimes making absolutely no sense. At one point he even said the only way to progress is to be "totally OK" with being devoured, eaten, subsumed to the 'vast intelligence' that is mining our emotions. As long as you struggle against the "tension and pressure", you are being "mined". You should just be in a state of "total OK-ness" (as opposed to "not-OK-ness" (seriously, his terms)). The people asking questions were more coherent than him, but they were eating it up, "If I'm understanding you correctly..."

Of course, this is totally antithetical to what we know about real personal development (as Gurdjieff taught, and as Dabrowski attempted to show scientifically). Tension is necessary, and not all tension 'feeds' these alleged intelligences (that's assuming they are a reality in the first place - note, de Ruiter does not phrase anything as a probability, just authoritative fact, of which he is certain). To just "give in" to being subsumed is basically to become a slave - to your trauma, your habits, your own 'abnormality'.

One guy said that when he was "gazing" with John, he saw things on John's face. John was quick to reply that this kid's "mental body" was seeing things he did not understand, so he would have a ready-made interpretation that was not true (I could imagine what this guy was seeing: scales!). That being with John opened their third eye. He speaks in a slow, monotone, hypnotic voice (the non-sequiturs and contradictory statements help with the trance-formation, I'd think), and there is not one iota of self-questioning or doubt in what he says. He gives the impression that he is the epitome of spiritual development, he has the ability to traverse dimensions with expertise, etc. And yet he cannot give any practical advice to those who ask him. With that said, I can't help but conclude that this guy does way more harm than good, instilling a dependency on him among his followers. Again, this is totally opposite to what a teacher should be: someone to help people develop their critical faculties, NOT be dependent, and become their own person.

Listening brought to mind Needleman's book Lost Christianity, where he talks about the importance of an 'intermediate' teaching. De Ruiter talks about 'states' that are not reasonable to expect from people, as if they can just automatically "be who they really are", offering no in-between step on how to actually get there (as it is, it's just psychopathic, being totally "OK" with everything). Again, quite disturbing and really sad to witness.

Looks like some big money involved. Has a website here (the only domain on that server) and a college shown here. Some insights into his behavior from a PhD candidate that studied him. Whole lot of articles on this guru! :)

The PhD candidate article is good:

October 31, 2006 – Edmonton — Edmonton-based John de Ruiter has been known to sit on stage, gaze out at his flock and say nothing for hours.

When he does speak, long gaps of silence often separate his sentences. Sometimes, when he takes questions, the self-proclaimed “living embodiment of the truth” will answer with nothing more than a silent, stone-faced stare.

For more than a decade, de Ruiter’s taciturn ways have managed to attract thousands of people from around the world to join his religious movement; a University of Alberta researcher has been exploring why de Ruiter’s silent approach has been so successful.

Paul Joosse, a PhD candidate in the U of A Department of Sociology, recently presented his findings at the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion annual conference in Portland, Oregon, and his research was published recently in the Journal of Contemporary Religion.

Joosse concluded that interpersonal silence effectively asserts de Ruiter’s charismatic authority over his followers in three ways.

Joosse believes de Ruiter’s silence allows his followers to project their own “highly personalized” meaning into the answers they receive from him. Joosse noted that de Ruiter’s followers often have a history of participation in various alternative religious movements before they settle into the de Ruiter group and are therefore more likely than most to find meaning in the vague messages that de Ruiter is known to express. {Critical correction, in Lobaczewski's lingo. De Ruiter is so vague, that someone looking for meaning can find it, but that's not to say it was there in the first place!}

Silence is also used by de Ruiter as a punitive tool and a means to discourage dissent, Joosse said, adding that the effect is similar to the way the Amish, at times, shun non-conformists in their group. However, one crucial difference is that the Amish employ the silent treatment collectively, while de Ruiter, the irreplaceable, exclusive authority figure in his group, uses it unilaterally.

As an example, in 1999 at a group meeting, de Ruiter’s ex-wife confronted de Ruiter about his adulterous relationships with two female devotees, who were sisters. According to various accounts, de Ruiter glared at her in response, essentially remaining mute.

“That de Ruiter still retained a large following after that episode speaks to the charismatic sway that he continues to exercise over his devotees,” said Joosse, who has conducted interviews and analyzed the group’s various communications material, such as video-taped meetings, which are for sale through the group’s website.

The third function of de Ruiter’s silence is that it accelerates the formation of intimate bonds between de Ruiter and his followers, especially when he combines it with extended eye contact. Joosse added that many of de Ruiter’s followers, a good number of whom are middle-aged females, see de Ruiter as possessing “a mysterious aura”.

In his article, Joosse wrote, “Silence is inappropriate on a first date or at a gathering of previously unacquainted people… (But) the cultivation of silence by the de Ruiter group permits a type of interaction that is usually exclusive to new lovers – deep, silent gazing into one another’s eyes. Strangers to de Ruiter find themselves locked in an intimate gaze, and it is not surprising that (they) confuse the act that usually accompanies intimacy with actual intimacy.” {This ties in precisely with what Sandra Brown writes about in WWLP.}

Joosse believes that de Ruiter, by keeping his mouth shut, has found an easily replicable method that works on a number of levels to captivate his followers.

“When people follow a charismatic leader, the existence of the group depends upon the continued belief that their leader is somehow extraordinary or even superhuman,” Joosse said. “Therefore, the leader must continually prove himself to his followers, and de Ruiter is able to achieve this simply by remaining silent.”

I listened to that talk, too, and I got the same impressions as yours. Actually for the most part, I could not make out what he was trying to say, he spoke very slowly and nonchalantly, repeating the same stuff over and over for an hour! He mentioned beings of other dimensions eating up our energy, but there's not much anyone can do about it, if one keeps their focus on their "internal tension", they might be able to be their true selves, but that will only make them more susceptible to be eaten by the beings of other dimensions, because their energy now is more refined, and it will "taste" better, or words to that effect. Oh, and the mind and emotions are misleading, not to be trusted. But wait, not all is doom and gloom, his students can have a third eye opening when in HIS presence!

According to a person I know who attends his lectures, this impostor has about 200 people who gather to listen to him twice every week! :scared:

His "advice" to his students to keep their focus inward at all times, without any practical suggestions on how this is to be done, or what the reason for it is, sounds like a recipe for disaster when it comes to forming healthy relationships or social communication. It sounds isolating and contractile, rather than expansive and bridging.

Listening to him, I was reminded of this part of this great article about spiritual predators (if anyone hasn't yet, I highly recommend you read the entire thing), Spiritual Predator: Prem Rawat AKA Maharaji:

Henry See said:
The goal of any esoteric work must be that of objectivity, first in our understanding of ourselves, and then, as our filters and programmes are dislodged, of the world. A true esoteric teaching will, therefore, not only focus on "Know Thyself", but will also provide knowledge about the reality of our reality. If one or the other of these aspects are missing from a teaching, then you can be certain that it is incomplete, and an incomplete teaching, even if through ignorance of the teacher, even if unconscious, is dangerous.

In today's world, all kinds of "gurus" and "spiritual" teachers/healers appear out of nowhere, and they are everywhere. The amount of people who are wounded, unable to understand the psychopathic reality around them, and are seeking out for help, for knowledge, for guides and teachers, is increasing too. That's how these spiritual predators are able to exist, operate, and profit in today's world: by taking advantage of the neediness of people, and exploit their wounds. I can imagine very few crimes worst than this.... And there's no force out there to stop them, they are even given reign. That's why it is so important for people to heal themselves, through diet and EE practice, and true objective Work on the self, in a network of teachers and guides who are also Working on objective understanding of themselves and reality.

And as Ennio says, you'll know these false prophets by their fruits:

bible said:
15Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

This guy sounds like he's working directly for 4D STS - just relax, there's nothing you can do about being eaten, so don't fight it. I can't imagine a more horrible message.

"You are one. There are others. Developing at this point."

Hello Laura, Ark, and fellow Forum members and members of FOTCM,

I'm a member of the Fellowship at the level of Listener and have been living in Edmonton, Canada for the last 4 years attending meetings with John de Ruiter at the College of Integrated Philosophy here in Alberta. I'm posting here because I have a question concerning the groups and wanted to give a little background before I ask.
I was a student in the 4th-Way Ridhwan School/Diamond Heart for 10 years in New York before I moved to Edmonton. The school is rooted in Sufism, Gurdjieff work (working with the 3 centers), Enneagram (at the level of the personality and the Holy Ideas), gestalt psychology, but it's main focus is on presence and the Diamond Guidance Vehicles, a body of knowledge that is unique to our time which unfolded the teaching through the main practice of open-ended inquiry. For many years in group work and individual sessions the constant question was "What am I believing right now?", "Who or what am I taking myself to be in relation to Other?", "What am I projecting onto Other?", all the while sensing the presence of my body and breathing. My teacher in the work, Alia, always said that if you're not making the unconscious conscious it's running the show and I saw it over and over again. This taught me very valuable lessons and ways of questioning that helped me heal from deep traumas and snapped me out of any residual New Age crap I was buying into growing up. It really laid the groundwork for doing the Work and for clearly seeing what was not the Work, revealing the STS paradigm for what it simply is and how everything is being filtered through the self, how others are manipulated through this mechanism in the culture. It also helped me recognize what was happening to me when I came to the Cassiopaean material and when I met John, what both were coming from and the orientation toward the truth I was deeply resonating with.
John is not manipulating people and this is not a cult. The cult "experts" will say what they will. They are saying horrible things about Laura, Ark and the C's and I just don't believe it simply because I apply the Knowledge and have nothing but startling results, especially the diet ( 2 years no gluten and 1 1/2 years not dairy. Amen) It's exactly the same with John, for me at least. I can't speak for others here.
Here is what John has said about what IS happening here with our group to the person in the questioners chair. It was spoken slowly:

"Two things are occurring here. Two things are overall occurring here.
The first, that everything that is occurring here is dependent on is the Calling and it's emergence.
The second is the development of a foundation, the coming together of Real Knowledge in your heart and in your self that accomplishes all of the ready-making.
Without belonging to Real Knowledge there is no belonging to Direct Knowledge. In belonging to Real Knowledge and the development of that in your self and in your life, filters out all of the distortion, bringing You-as-Awareness consciously within your self and in your heart into Purity of Knowing.
Purity of Knowing, together with the Calling, is requisite to entering Direct Knowledge.
In coming into function as a Being, by turning INTO Direct Knowledge, it's purpose has nothing to do with your self or this world until you become seasoned in being a Being, a realm within which you move with ability, a realm that has no crossover. The crossover is only from within the Backdrop of Reality, realms entered into of the Backdrop, the Backdrop of Reality. Development of yours in that is only as a Being. It doesn't involve your self. Your self isn't at all needed.
'A' self is needed for you being a Being in other realms to enter this world for the awakening of this world. The self that you have known and used and lived by isn't the kind of self that you will need. That self is developed by You being a Being. It has to do with your functioning as Awareness as a Being that isn't of what this world is, that isn't of what your self has been. A different kind of self is developed by your being a Being from with the Backdrop of Reality. The bridge is one-directional
making it not reachable, realizable or accomplishable without the Calling and the opening of that
because of the Rightness of Time.
There isn't the possibility. The balancing of all the realms does not take place from within Reality. It can only take place by the Backdrop of Reality manifested IN Reality. That requires the function of a Being developing a self that is functional in both with that accomplishing entrance into this world.
It is that that I am all about. It is that that you are responding to, that you are awakening to and that ready-making is being done.
A living foundation is being put in place
so that your field of relating, in what it has been confined to, no longer confines you to Reality as you've known it, enabling you to have entrance to it's Backdrop, having your entrance to what Reality is, as you've known it, is completely dependent on. You are not just called into what this is. Once you begin to respond, responding to the Calling, All-of-You and all of your Belief, all of your Belief in what it has been installed is needed, is needed in your coming into what the Being, all on it's own is and the function that it comes into.
In relating to Direct Knowledge no one is needed in what this is until there is response to what this is. Through response what this is is coming into this world. Those who are awakened to it are needed.
This doesn't occur on this planet unless for the whole planet it is time.
This planet cannot come into balance on it's own.
This planet cannot come into balance without all of the realms coming into balance. This planet first has to come into all of the other realms which it isn't able to do on it's own. The Calling moves from within other realms in you.
Accomplishing in you that you are of other realms.
As you believe what you're knowing you can be brought in. A Becoming takes place that has nothing to do with what this planet relates to, a Becoming that enables you to function completely as a Being and to form a self that is able to make what is unseen of this world, of other realms, to be made seen.
The inception of the Backdrop of Reality IN Reality...the very beginning of the balancing.
As soon as you know because of being awakened, a completely different kind of belonging is awakened.
This is what is happening to you.
This is what is occurring here.
A tiny community...and this is actually occurring."

In the same way Carla and Don of the Ra Material had a prejudice and therefore "the questions were not asked" about certain topics, I don't want this to be an impediment in any way for those of us living with/ through/ for Knowledge. I am taking responsibility for what I am and what I see.
All of that said, I would like to ask the question:
Mother Cassiopaea, I realize there is no more time to hold back what I see here in Edmonton. What is needed now with regard to the groups and the realm convergence wave on the way?
My sincere thanks for this opportunity to ask.
