Adaryn
The Living Force
She is an author that I really love and admire. I studied her writings at university, and rediscovered her "Selected Stories" recently with great pleasure and awe. Her style is fantastic ; her short stories focus on the characters' inner states and her depiction of human psychology is so accurate, rich and subtle.
I found out she followed Gurdjieff's course at the end of her life and actually died of tuberculosis at G's institute in Paris :

Here's an account by James Moore of their meeting :

Virginia Woold said about her : 'I was jealous of her writing. The only writing I have ever been jealous of.'
Some of her masterpieces, which you can read online here :

4. Mr. and Mrs. Dove
5. The Young Girl
6. Life of Ma Parker
7. Marriage a la Mode
8. The Voyage
9. Miss Brill
10. Her First Ball
11. The Singing Lesson
12. The Stranger
13. Bank Holiday
14. An Ideal Family
15. The Lady's-Maid
Other short stories I most particularly loved :
- Bliss, which you can find online here (the title is significant -- but I don't want to spoil the "suspense") : http://www.inlex.org/stories/mansfield/bliss.html
- Prelude (introducing the characters of At the Bay)
-The Little Governess
- M. Reginald peacock day
- Sun and Moon
- The Man without a temperament
- Something childish but very natural
-The Fly
You can find all her short stories in paperbacks for a small price on Amazon.
