Being in Kenya and watching as the situation develops, this could be another attack by the Al Shabab but as it is also pointed out there may be other factors at play here.

For starters, the current president has a case Human rights case at the ICC where he and others are accused of having contributed to the violence witnessed in 2007/08. He was also not the president of choice at the time of the elections for the US and the UK, the UK is actually on record saying that it would cut diplomatic ties should he be elected. Now, Kenyans are an interesting lot and they went for the person who the US and the UK did not want, Uhuru Kenyatta as opposed to Raila Odinga, who was their preferred choice and may or may not be related to Obama. It is thought that part of the reason why the case was fast tracked in the ICC was to form a barrier and prevent Uhuru from vying for president. Fast forward to today, the whole world has watched the events in ICC and personally I think that it is possible that Uhuru might not even prosecuted eventually - which doesn't mean that he isn't guilty but politics as usual will come into play for all sides.

But that is not all, the former president Mwai Kibaki, during his tenure in office changed his focus from the West to the East in terms of trade and this something that the current president is furthering and has so far been to Russia and China. However, what I think was a hit below the belt to the Western PTB was Uhuru having the audacity to bring the entire East African leadership to Kenya and facilitate that meeting with the Chinese head of state in Kenya.

Some Kenyans are of the opinion that Kenya might go the Ukrainian way bearing in mind the fact that Raila just returned from the US from a two month visit of which nobody knows what his business was and his supporters are anything but aggressive in demanding changes and may be even another coalition government or possibly a revolution if their rhetoric is to be believed.

It is also important to note that Kenyans are disgruntled by the current state of affairs in the country and this was noted in the Lamu events, in which it just wasn't non-muslims being targeted but rather the nature of businesses which were attacked are business owned by the Kenyan Elite from a particular tribe, so it could also just be another way of trying to get the president to notice the same as he comes from the said tribe.

That said however, it also worth noting that since Uhuru became the president, the militant attacks have increased ten fold and we all know the brains behind Al Shabab as part of Al Qaeda, are they trying to pass him a message, who knows only time will tell.
