Large sinkhole forms in downtown Ottawa

The Living Force
This morning the city awoke to a large sinkhole formed on a downtown street. The city has been tunneling in the area to support the underground portion of the light rail transit expansion. Although the cause has yet to be determined, the city seems to be leaning toward the tunneling activities as being responsible. The hole has an 8-metre diameter and a 12-metre depth. They are filling the hole with concrete. The city engineer will be providing a briefing at 1 PM (EST).

The city is no stranger to sinkholes. Last October, a sinkhole formed on a major road in the city's east end community of Orleans on St. Joseph Blvd. A year earlier, in September, a sinkhole had formed in the east end (also Orleans) on one of the city's main highway (HWY #174).
