Laser Communications through space

I am very interested in the interplanetary communications, and hope do discuss using the light for it.
Can one just switch the antenna with laser diodes and photoreceptors on a wifi reciever and still get communications with another such device?
If not, can laser diodes and photoreceptors even react fast enough to transmit ultra high frequency communications?
What is the required power (a laser pointer, 1w, etc) for communications to the moon, mars or any other interplanetary communication?
How does one go about making the cheapest setup for Data transmission over light?
I'm sadly not an expert, idk how one searches answers on google efficiently.
Generally i think it will be like the fibre cables in the ocean in 1-2 centuries, but now already good possible.
