I discovered this comic a year or two ago during some random internet wanderings, and it really had a strong emotional impact on me. My eyes still well up when I get to the last frame. Anyway, reading on SOTT today reminded me of this comic, which seems very poignant in light of all the comet info.

Apparently, in actuality this is a page from a series of comics in which the girl has some supernatural powers (according to _http://neop.gbtopia.com/?p=174 as I haven't read any of the others yet), so it's actually your typical save-the-world type thing. [EDIT: actually, after actually reading other pages of the comic, most pages are not continuations, but mini-stories about the girl, Minus. After reading it, I would call it "typical" anymore.]
Taken by itself, however, I think it's a powerful metaphor. Even when everyone else is either resigned or unwilling to take real action in the face of catastrophe and annihilation, we can still do what is within our power to grasp that tiniest chance of success, for the good of all.
Or am I wrong?
