This has been on my mind for some time now, but I haven’t really voiced my opinions on the subject. This is due to the fact that, when considering the current situation threatening the future of SOTT, the matter following will probably look like an unimportant issue - A mere sideline suggestion at best, or a distraction from the real issues at worst.
As an informal student of the Mandarin and English languages, I have been pondering the intricacies of linguistics and how to translate English into Chinese. To my knowledge (correct me if I’m wrong), there isn’t anyone here delving into this subject as a means of disseminating information to a greater audience, whom, if translations aren't made in time, might never get the chance of receiving this precious knowledge expounded here at SOTT.net because they can’t understand English.
Basically, I’ve been considering how the study of linguistics fits into the database that is the SOTT forum. Currently, there isn’t a separate subject heading for linguistics.
How the study of languages in itself contributes towards a greater understanding of objective reality IS studied and written about on the wave series and SHOTW, but there isn't a separate heading in the forum for which to post further studies on the subject.
I mean, looking through the headings from which one could post a possible contribution to the forum database, there are detailed categorizations for topics about history, dreams, diet and health, religion etcetera, but I’ve noticed that topics which deal with the subject of linguistics seem to be scattered around and not consolidated under ONE subject heading.
Consider as an example the fact that words have certain connotations, and the meaning of certain words have been changed forcefully by the PTB in order to trigger certain responses to certain words. Words like ‘terrorism’, ‘anti-Semitism’ and ‘cult’ are examples of the PTB robbing us of our freedom to express meaning to others.
How many times have you said a word and witnessed people ‘switching off’ due to ignorance over the real meaning of the words used?
This is one example of how knowledge of history and linguistics can help us in discovering the real meaning behind words and how to use them effectively. I won’t go into further details for now, but I’ve seen many writings by Laura where knowledge of etymology, for example, has played a vital role in ‘piercing the veil’ of disinformation and lies.
Why isn’t there a separate heading in the forum for analyzing various studies of language itself?
Maybe there could be a category on the forum made that specifically deals with the subject of linguistics and translations? I thought that since there are members on the forum that speak a wealth of different languages, maybe it could be useful for them to read and opine about research into linguistics?
I’m just offering a suggestion, which, IMO, could make searching for this subject easier in practical terms. Plus, I’d love to post my own discoveries about the Chinese language so that a greater understanding of the east could be brought about.
Consider, for example, how there are many “eastern gurus” (COINTELPRO) that are currently “interpreting” knowledge of the east into the west, but how little chance do we have of understanding what the meaning behind the actual words are?
Just looking at the Dao De Jing for example, there are countless translations that have been made, most of which totally obscure the true meaning behind the text, or which do not take into full account all the factors which make a credulous search into the “spiritual aspects” of the text fruitless or even dangerous.
Likewise, if we stand any chance of successfully learning from eastern cultures whose language roots are totally different to European languages, then not only may research into linguistics be useful, but posting proper translations of Indian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese Etcetera… texts might elucidate universal truths further.
I understand that there are more pressing subjects to look into at this time (psychopathy and ponerology for example), and my suggestion might be unimportant for SOTT’s purposes, but as a student of linguistics, I thought this suggestion could have some uses.
Any thoughts and opinions would be appreciated.
