Hi, I had a different take on this movie than the other posts. I think it had a forward looking meta-message in it which was, Iran is the real enemy not Afghanistan.
I am going on memory but there are two scenes where this message is slipped in:
1. Streep is told by Cruise that Iran is helping the terrorists in Afghanistan. Streep responds by saying, "Now that's the real story".
2. The two young soldiers are being briefed in front of a whiteboard by their commander before going on their mission. The commander points to Iran on a map and intimates that they are the baddies.
It is kind of subtle I suppose but the movie did make the point.
