Long threads

Hi,

Just a short technical question ...

is there a way in a long thread with lets say 100 pages (like the Eiriu Eolas thread for instance) to navigate directly to page 60 without having to go all the way from the first page to where I want to go?

The reason I ask is, that I would like to resume a thread that I didn't followup for a while, but would like to do that without having to browse through all the pages.

Thanks for your help!

The only thing that i found is that:

The code of the thread is for the first page: http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=12837.0 (12837.0)

The code of the thread for the third page is: http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=12837.30 (12837.30)

The code of the thread for the 7th page is: http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=12837.90 (12837.90)

The code of the thread for the 80th page is: http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=12837.1185 (12837.1185)

So, you can see that the numbers at the end of the link are always going up (0 30 90 115) but that the number of the thread is always the same (12837).

So, you have to try a couple of numbers and see where it goes. This is not a direct method but it is method of trial and error.

Hope it helps.

If you type in the reply number as the suffix it will take you to the page that reply is located. The addresses Bohort listed have the first reply of the respective pages. So if you use http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=12837.36 you will arrive at the same page as http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=12837.30

I think that i found something better.

Here's a little bit of math.

Say you want to go to page 31 of the thread Eíriú-Eolas - Breathing Program

http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=12837.0

First of all, you have to find the number of the topic, in our example it is 12837

Each page has 15 posts.

Here's the equation:

(number of the page that you want to reach -1) x15= 450 which is the number to put at the end of the number of the thread.

http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=12837.450

In my previous post, i said that the number of the 80th page was 12837.1185. 12837 being the fix number of the thread.

Then if we take the equation, we have:

(80 - 1) x 15 and the result is 1185.

And we put that number just after the number of the topic, while removing the 0 or the other number

So we have : http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=12837.1185 ;D

Hoping it helps.

It works - brilliant!

This is great! I also had a question in my head somewhere whenever I see this link number parameter.
Why 15 seems because of the amount that contains the page (it seems a page have consistently 15 posts).

I verified:

also. So it seems a very 'convenient' mechanism (I see the 'intention' of programmer!), which means if I want to read the 100th post of the thread then just add number parameter .100 (equals to .90 (15 x 6)) then the post will be found on the 7th page. :cool2:

Another smiler question I have is about the direct '(HTML) anchor' link to a post, e.g. msg110955#msg110955 (this is to the MC's post above). What is the formula for this number parameter?

Edit (realized later...): It seems this number is 'beyond' thread restriction. It seems just a sequence number of the post for entire Forum measured by liner time. Therefore there can not be a formula for this number since post entries are at random in terms of thread..

Exactly, it is a sequential number.

Thanks a lot guys for your help!

That is exactly the information that I needed.
I actually had tried to fiddle with this number, but it didn't seem to work at all!

Thanks again!
