I did not find much on the forum about this, so I thought I would share some of the natural ways of healing/help this condition. I visited my husbands family yesterday for Thanksgiving. His grandmother has a really bad/painful condition of lymphedema. I feel so bad and want to help. Her poor legs are the size of watermelons and she says it feels like fire ants running up and down her legs and stinging.
Below is an email I sent to another family member that helps take care of the grandparents on what I had gathered so far. Sorry for the length and bad spelling/grammer. I just wondered if anyone here had any advice? She had hip surgery two years ago and its gotten really bad after that. She first started having these problems when she was thirteen. She thinks its from all the spraying of the cotton fields when she was young(thanks monsanto)
They currently are doing very tight wraps by a company called Juzo
Here is the email I sent with all the natural stuff I could find:
The condition known as lymphedema is caused by the accumulation of fluid in the body's interstitial tissues which surround the lymph glands. It occurs when lymph nodes are missing, removed or damaged - making it impossible for the lymphatic system to remove excess lymphatic fluid through the lymph vessels. Left untreated, lymphedema can cause serious complications including infection and interference with wound healing. However, there are natural lifestyle changes and remedies which can often offer substantial relief.
It seems to me that this is a catch 22. The fluids are sent to the lymphnodes to detox and it is not able to so all these toxins get stuck there( large lump that developed probably bacteria.)There are two types of lymphedema. The first, primary lymphedema, is caused by the absence of lymph nodes or abnormalities in the lymphatic system at birth. Secondary lymphedema is caused by removal of lymph nodes during surgery, radiation treatments, infection, malignancy, or build up of scar tissue. It is not uncommon to see a cancer patient with lymphedema after surgery that involves removal of lymph nodes.
Do you know wich kind she has. Does her lymphs still work at all in her legs?Lymphedema can also result in reduction of oxygen availability, which provides an environment for bacteria to accumulate.
Exercising, lymphatic massage, and compression garments are some effective ways of treating lymphedema. In addition to these treatments, it is also important to implement the following:
*Detoxify the body on a regular basis. This will be the Only way from what I can see to stop this cycle of toxic flow or lack there of.
When we first started our diet we started with lots and lots of cilantro. Cilantro is a great antioxidant and also removes heavy metal in a gental yet effective way. Next we took a supplement called Chlorella. Chlorella is a green single celled microalgea that contains the highest concentrations of chlorophill known. Chlorella also supplies high levels of beta-carotene,vitamen c ,Iron, and protien. The call wall has been broken down mechanically to aid digestion and absortion level.
If overweight, lose those excess pounds.
*This will happen naterally if she cuts out certain foods and keeps movin and groovin!
*Eliminate all unhealthy foods. These include processed foods, junk foods, fast foods, sugar, artificial sweeteners, and unhealthy oils (coconut and tropical oils are the most healthy). Eat as many organic raw fruits and vegetables as possible. The diet should include natural yogurt and probiotics. Probiotics help keep friendly bacteria in the intestines thriving, support the immune system, and aid in toxin removal.
All inflamitory foods need to be eliminated such as potatoes, tomatoes, and most importantly All grains.
Supplements and herbs that will help to alleviate the condition are:
*Bromelain helps to reduce swelling and inflammation. It is recommended that 250 to 500 mg be taken on an empty stomach three times a day.
*Butcher's Broom strengthens blood vessel walls and improves circulation. It also relieves swelling, inflammation, and edema. Recommended dosage is 100 mg once a day for at least three months.
*Emu Oil caplets boost immune cell function, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation. Suggested dosage is 1,000 mg daily.
*Horse Chestnut reduces inflammation and alleviates phlebitis.
*Flax seed oil capsules are anti-inflammatory. Recommended dosage is 1,000 mg twice daily.
*Fish oil is also anti-inflammatory. 1 to 2 capsules should be taken at bedtime.
*Boswellia Serrata is an Ayurvedic herb that reduces inflammation.
*Ginger Tea increases circulation and reduces inflammation. Add 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger to 1 cup hot water. Drink 3 times a day.
*Calcium and magnesium, taken at a ratio of 2:1 calcium to magnesium, help to clear free radicals from the body and reduce inflammation.
If bone broth in a soup are eaten twice or more a week this will work wonders.Detoxification
Detoxify as much as possible, avoiding overweight and creating the greatest possible health and internal cleanliness. Use detoxifying baths such as epsom salt baths which have the additional advantage of chelating ionizing radiation & destructive radioactivity from your body
Anti-inflammatory diet: a woman who had suffered from lymphedema in her leg for over two and a half decades reported that after gradually adopting an anti- inflammatory diet (eliminating "forbidden" foods one by one), her legs looked almost normal within seven days and she felt extremely good.
Cabbage leaf packs
While it does sound ridiculous at first glance, cabbage leaf applications have even saved lives and are a mainstay in famed Swiss healer Father Thomas Haeberle's books. A woman reported that following mastectomy, she suffered from persistent lymphedema and had tried elastic bandages to no avail. After reading that cabbage leaves had helped in cases of breast engorgement, she applied crushed cabbage leaves over the bulge and held them in place with elastic bandage. After experiencing significant improvement happening overnight, she reported that three nights later the swelling had virtually disappeared. You can read background incl. a free book on using cabbage leaf poultices for healing purposes at Tumors healed thanks to cabbage leaf poultices and ... unconditional love.
Also, during these times of severe swelling, eat more broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cabbage, with less salt intake. These are natural diuretics and may help you over the hump during these episodes.
I also read that long chain triglyserides are a no-no. So that means no pork or beef, but butter, fish, and chicken has smaller chain fats that are easy digest and use.
I made them an ointment with lemon, rosemary, ginger, juniper, coconut oil, cinnamen, vanilla ,and almond oil. It smells great and can be used for a messaging oil. I also read an artical but I cant find it but it was talking about how our skin is basically a third liver for our body. Skin is an organ that eleiminates toxins. It stated that a dry soft brushing to eliminate dead cells on the top layer that still are holding toxins should be brushed off before a bath, so as to not reabsorb the toxins. And then use epsom salt in soaks.
This is a hard one and the only way to make it better even if a little is to be very pro-active with food and exersice. Do they have physical therapy options avalable? I know my grand father hated going to PT, but he showed a huge improvement after doing so .
If anyone knows any more I would love the input. Thanks for taking your time to read this. It's really hard to see her suffer so.
