Wonder, if the Woolwich attack is being used to limit Internet usage via Facebook and Twitter?

In Britain, Police arrest Twitter and Facebook Users if they make Anti-Muslim Statements

British police are arresting people in the middle of the night if they have made racist or anti-Muslim comments on Twitter following the murder of a soldier by two Muslims in Woolwich, London.
Three men have so far been taken into custody for using Twitter and Facebook to criticize Muslims.

In the Woolwich attack, Lee Rigby, a drummer in the Royal Regiment of Fusliers, was run down in a car and then hacked and stabbed to death by two men with knives and a cleaver. They told a man video recording the scene that it was vengeance for the killings of Muslims by the British Army.

One man has been charged with "malicious communications" on Facebook, the Daily Mail reports.

Two others have been arrested under the Public Order Act on suspicion of inciting racial or religious hatred. The police are now arresting people based on mere speech in social media, a detective said in a statement to the press:

'The men were arrested under the Public Order Act on suspicion of inciting racial or religious hatred. Our inquiries into these comments continue.

'These comments were directed against a section of our community. Comments such as these are completely unacceptable and only cause more harm to our community in Bristol.

'People should stop and think about what they say on social media before making statements as the consequences could be serious.'

The arrests come at the behest of British Muslims, who fear a backlash against them following the death of Rigby, The New York Times says:

The police and Muslim groups have said that there have been anti-Muslim episodes in many parts of the country, the most common involving derogatory messages on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook.

A number of arrests have been made, with criminal charges being leveled in some cases under laws against inciting racial or religious hatred, and Muslim community leaders have reported rising concern among the estimated 2.5 million Muslims in Britain.

Two men were detained in the middle of the night after they expressed anger at Muslims on Twitter. The Independent quotes police as saying:

"We began inquiries into the comments and at around 3.20am two men, aged 23 and 22, were detained at two addresses in Bristol.

"The men were arrested under the Public Order Act on suspicion of inciting racial or religious hatred. Our inquiries into these comments continue."

It's an interesting one in this new digital age. Data mining social media sites provides invaluable information for authorities to keep tabs on folk (and to make dawn arrests like this) so I don't see the benefits to them of imposing limits. People do need to be far more aware of the fact that when they post public messages it is akin to standing on the street with a megaphone. Any form of racism is deplorable but arresting people in the middle of the night for tweeting seems OTT and it is also a concern where the line is drawn. It's rather 'big brother'.:(

Hi, angelburst29, there is an article on Sott page http://www.sott.net/article/262183-Attack-on-alternative-media-begins-Internet-the-vital-frontline-in-war-against-extremism where it was said the following:

Umut Ertogral, who runs the Met's Open-Source Intelligence Unit, told an information security conference last week that the unit was also exploring [online] association to establish influencers, particularly for protest movements. "We're trying to build friend lists on Facebook, who's connected to whom, who are the influencers out there etc," he said.

So, one of the goals of authorities behind the Woolwich attack was not so much limiting the Internet usage of social media sites, but to round up dissidents.

This kind of association analysis is exactly what we did in Iraq in order to destroy the insurgency. Except facebook hands it to the government on a platter.

I've been pondering over the last few days just what the PTB are aiming for. On one side you have such an obvious, almost juvenile psychological operation (the killing), designed to whip up more muslim hate, yet on the other side you have the media mouth pieces seemingly trying to convey that the majority of muslims are peaceful, acting as the 'voice of reason' for once. We also have these arrests, which, if you look at the comments on that article, only serve to get people even more riled up against muslims.

It seems like they are trying to bolster the far-right community in England, but while appearing not to be doing so. Divide and conquer 101, I know, but I'm interested to see where they'll try to go with this. It seems they are purposely giving fuel to the fire, which causes all this 'hate speech', which gives them further cause to restrict free speech, restrict protesting, etc.

The EDL protests and growing anti-muslim sentiments also echo so closely the rise of the Nazi party, described in Sebastian Haffner's book, that it is more than uncanny. How they were seen as idiots and not taken seriously by most people, until one day the country was theirs. But then our government is already run by maniacs, they just hide it better.
