A man aged 25 was killed in a shootout with police Saturday, 1 January, close to Montfermeil, Seine-Saint-Denis. According to preliminary information available, this man left his home Friday night with weapons, following a family dispute.
His family alerted police who tracked him on Saturday afternoon to Coubron, common near the Seine-et-Marne. The young man took refuge in the woods and opened fire on police, wounding one of them. The police returned fire, mortally wounded the gunman.
The prefect of the Seine-Saint-Denis, Christian Lambert , went to the hospital bedside of injured policeman. According to France Info , the policeman was wounded in the arm and the tibia by the shot, the young man fatally shot in the abdomen.
According to information from radio, the young man, residing in Livry-Gargan, left his home late Friday night in his car, in a "state of dementia," according to his family, who had then made to the police. He said "see UFOs" and had brought a shotgun with him.
He was spotted the next day by a police patrol. According to France Info, the man parked his car near a field, ran away and opened fire.
