A man known as Wellington Menezes de Oliveira, 23 years old, entered a school in Realengo, Rio de Janeiro, 07/04/2011 at aproximately 8 A.M armed with two revolvers, a belt of ammunition and proceeded to execute 13 children and teenagers, mostly girls, by shooting them in the face and torso. When he was climbing the stairs to continue the executions, he was shot in the leg by an police officer. The man then commited suicide by shooting himself in the head. He left a note with islamist overtones to it saying that he was gonna be forgiven by Jesus for what he has done, and asking to have his house transformed into a animal shelter after his death.
The man was a former student of the school and had no prior history of violence.
Since Rio de Janeiro has no history of spree killers, this event shocked and disturbed the populace for the sheer brutality and lack of answers for the "why".
