At least three people have been killed in a knife attack at a creche in north-western Belgium, officials say.

Two children and one adult died after a man ran amok at the nursery in Dendermonde, north-west of Brussels, the interior ministry said.

The man arrived at the creche with his face painted black and white and attacked the infants, before fleeing on a bicycle, local officials said.

Police have arrested a suspect, who is now receiving hospital treatment.

As well as killing three people, the attacker also injured 11 more.

Three children are reported to be in a serious condition in hospital.

One of those who died is believed to be a nursery nurse and Dendermonde's deputy mayor, Theo Janssens, said several adults had been injured as they tried to put themselves between the attacker and the children.

"The guy just went crazy," Mr Janssens said. "There was blood everywhere, it was unbelievable, real carnage."

The creche has been evacuated and local authorities have put a disaster plan in place.

Town 'in shock'

Nursery staff told journalists that the attacker was not known to them.

Officials said he had rung the doorbell at the nursery and told staff he needed some information.

When they opened the door, he ran in and began attacking three of the youngsters.

"He quickly pulled out a knife and started using it on the children," said local prosecutor Christian Du Four.

"He then went up to another floor and started doing the same thing again."

The prosecutor said the man's face had been smeared with a white colouring but his eyes had been blackened.

Residents told the BBC that the town was stunned by the incident.

Damien Vernon, a 43-year-old from Ireland who has lived in Dendermonde for five years, said: "It's just a sad day here, we're a small town and the crime figures are low here, we're just in shock."

Photographs

The creche looks after 18 children under the age of three.

Police have been showing parents digital photographs of the youngsters taken to hospital, asking them to identify their children.

Interior Minister Guido De Padt told a press conference he was "horrified by the events".

"Our thoughts go out to the families and staff of the creche," he said. "Many parents are in a state of shock."

The children and staff from the nursery who escaped without injury are now receiving counselling.

Flemish TV station VTM had initially reported three children and two adults had died but the interior ministry later gave the lower casualty figures.

This really sounds like a Greenbaum person setting off early (or not).

This is really shocking to say the least, especially given the young ages of the victims (between 0 and three).

The information about the make-up is quite strange, it is very bizarre if nobody asked him why he was wearing make-up (well, not if the staff could not see his face through the door/interphone).

Thanks for posting.

Interesting timing. Recently I just finished reading The Wave 11c and started reading The Greenbaum Speech. I'm halfway and I'm just really shocked by this material, I've heard of it before, but actually reading this is really shocking to me...
The other day at school I was talking with my friends about this case (the man who killed 2 children and 1 adult). One of my friends said that the killer told that he didn't remember anything of it, he didn't remember he killed them.. I couldn't find an article that has this information, but if it is true, then indeed... I'd also think that this guy could be a ''Greenbaum person''.

The Greenbaum Speech said:
If you're going to get an assassin, you're going to get somebody to go do something, you divide the mind. It fascinates me about cases like the assassination of Robert Kennedy, where Bernard Diamond, on examining Sirhan Sirhan found that he had total amnesia of the killing of Robert Kennedy, but under hypnosis could remember it.

Yes indeed.
I also find it strange that the make-up didn't ring any bells of ''danger'' or ''weirdness', if they had the chance to see it.

I read an article that said that the guy who killed them is very much into movies and so he put the make-up on his face to look like ''The Joker'' from the Batman movie. That's what I read.

That's what I heard as well but very briefly, not much information filtered out to my knowledge.
He is suspected very strongly to have commited a previous murder, on an old lady.
He had no track records of going to a mental institute but was recognized as severly depressed, contrary to what was said previously by the TV media.

The reactions so far, have been to reinforce the protection of nurseries with more cameras and electronic locks.

The make-up thing has been linked to rumors of sect or the Joker movie but it sounds more like wild rumours to me, there hasn't been offical declaration about this, I don't know it could be just noise.

Haentjens said an investigation had shown that 'at a certain point, he spoke of certain voices in his head'.

The name of the nursery was "The land of Fables", which somehow strikes me as a wake-up call for people, keep believing that everything si safe and sound and the big bad wolf will come and eat you up osit.
