While suicide is a socially tolerated form of death in Japan, and it has a relatively high suicide rate - this incident is strange and tragic. Having taken the Shinkansen many times, it is normally super efficient, very safe, and also very quiet, where everyone maintains very low noise levels in consideration for the general environment. Hence for a person to self imolate in view of the other passengers, in Japanese society it is like bold statement or strange anomaly. I guess it is another sign of the times :(
