Map of the world modified to reflect population

A cartogram is a visualization in which statistical information is shown in diagrammatic form. In this case, it’s a population cartogram, where each square in the map represents 500,000 people in a country’s population.

In total there are 15,266 squares, representing all 7.633 billion people on the planet.

Countries like Canada or Russia – which have giant land masses but small relative populations – appear much smaller on this kind of map. Meanwhile, a country like Bangladesh grows much bigger, because it has a large population living within a smaller area. (I learned this new fact: Nigeria is expected to have the world's largest city of 88 million residents by 2100.)

Various continental regions are enlarged below the map to provide a sense of what can be learned from a population cartogram done in this fashion.

Really interesting, Thanks for Posting the information JGeropoulas. :-)

Since it's a population cartogram, in diagrammatic form, I wonder what kind of visual would be produced - if active Volcano's and Earthquakes above 2.0 in the last hundred years were added? It would pin-point the most active danger zones, per population density, in any geological location.
