My niece is getting married this weekend and I got a card (blank) for the occasion to put one of my old poems in it.
I was searching for my old poetry on a flash drive when a friend stopped over and expressed an interest. I found this old marriage poem below and he recommended that I change it some to fit in the twenty-first century.
The original is in iambic pentameter with a rhyme scheme of abba, cddc, effe. My friend suggested putting the end rhymes together so I took the first line of each quatrain and put it as the last.
Here's the original followed by the new alteration. I have used the altered one for my niece.
Summer sonnet for a love wondrous role, a
Singing praise for life in flowers and trees, b
Hailing heartful hellos for you to please, b
This poem of plenty rejoicing the soul. a
Harmony like the wind on a bird song c
Comes from a marriage created for good; d
Sacred living life, as all living would, d
blesses your marriage to be Love so long. c
The power for today is Love divine, e
Upon you both has it come to rest, f
As you become one, is One doubly bless’d, f
Giving itself away as two combine. e
