Mrs.Tigersoap
The Living Force
SPOILER ALERT
The movie begins with Martha fleeing from the commune where she has been living for some time. She calls her older sister who comes to pick her up. Little by little, we discover what happened at the commune.
We saw this movie yesterday and we really liked it even though it leaves you with a bitter aftertaste and is rather sad. But it brilliantly depicts a psychopathic Manson-style ‘guru’ preying on lost and lonely young women. What we really appreciated was that it was very low key and subdued, not at all dramatic and garish while (in my opinion) really getting the message across in a chilling way. A few chosen scenes speak volumes about what is going on in this commune and it’s all that’s needed. Everything is shown in these few scenes: the paramoralisms, the lies, the distorted and crazy world view, the girls’ self-soothing and self-deceit , the abominable brainwashing, the loss of time, of boundaries and of a sense of right and wrong that the victims undergo and the consequences once they get out of it. It was also both fascinating and creepy to see how the psychopath is operating (through the boys, the girls, his choice of words, his renaming of the girls, the ‘cleansing’ ritual, etc.).
The flashback scenes are seamlessly integrated in the ‘present’ scenes/timeline, illustrating well Martha’s confusion about the past and the present, about dream and reality and allowing us to discover her memories of the commune as they rise.
The photography was beautiful as well which is an added bonus. Well worth seeing imo.
