Mayan Traditional Medicine

I think the article linked below introduces traditional Mayan healing knowledge quite well.

My sister lives in Mahahual, Mexico. We were visiting her six years ago and my partner developed a nasty sinus infection. After trying the conventional pharmacy remedies we were familiar with, my sister suggested the local medicine man who runs a "refreshment" shack in the pueblo.

He asked my partner about her symptoms and medical history and the started crushing leaves and herbs in a traditional Mayan mortar and pestle. While he was preparing the drink for her, he asked about her family, relationships and feelings about what seemed like innocuous "touristy" things. It turns out (according to this article) that the Q&A is part of the traditional diagnosis.

It took him more than twenty minutes to finish making the drink. At the end, it was only the equivalent of six dollars Canadian, but my partner's infection was gone in two hours and didn't return.
