Robert Rich & Alio Die - The Road to Wirikuta http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCjjsmcOnxs
This is very emotional and moody ambient-music, that has a very organic and complex texture due to analogue instruments, that are 'magically' altered to create this very unique sound. Mr. Rich is not just an expert knob twiddler but also an experienced pianist who also mastered certain stringed instruments and flutes. He really knows what keys he plays. There is no other music, I've encountered so far, that has affected me so deeply. Listening to the ambient-scapes of robert rich seems to work on a very deep, subconscious level. As I know from different reviews, it has a very relaxing, meditative effect on his listeners.
Around the eighties, he attended Stanford University. During his tenure there, Rich became well known in the San Francisco Bay area for giving live night-time performances for somnolent or sleeping audiences. These were experiments to influence REM cycle sleep with auditory stimulus. They were usually nine hours long and lasted from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.. During these performances, he would generate abstract drones and atmospheres while the audience dozed in sleeping bags that they brought themselves. In the morning he would end the concert with piano solos. He would then serve tea to the audience (Wikipedia).
I know, perception of music is quite subjective. It depends on the listeners points of contact, which are quite unique, although different perceptions can share common characteristics. So there seems to be an objective potential to any form of communication like major and minor resembles cold and warm, basic moods that can be commonly understood. That's how movie scores work. In that regards I find it fascinating what images and thoughts can be evoked by a certain piece of music. Those seem to be far more unique to the individual than the perception of the basic mood, that can be identified by many as for example sad or happy.
So if you like this tune, feel free to share your perception. I wonder what similarities or differences there are.
EDIT: I changed the title
