Quite a big tail for a plane... My guess is also ---> Comet

They are just saying that a man shot the video yesterday at 5:30 in Juliaca, and they think it is most likely a meteorite, but that the experts might have a better opinion.

Thanks Windmill knight. :)

I'm really new to watching the skies, but a cursory analysis would tell me there's no way that this could be a meteor or comet. Look at how slowly it is moving forward. Look at how long the (for lack of a better word) contrail is, and how there has been plenty of time for the wind patterns to distort the tail end of the trail.

That object has to have spent over 5-10 minutes trailing over a relatively small arc of the sky. A meteor needs to enter the atmosphere (relatively low altitude i.e. distance to the observer) and move fast enough to burn up, factors which when combined imply a fast observed speed and short duration to cover a similar sky arc.

I think the best explanation is one of the youtube comments, to the effect that it could simply be a plane whose contrail gets hit be the setting sun... or something else entirely.

Thoughts?

As far as I know meteorites can move very slow (at least in can appear that way) and make seemingly impossible maneuvers.
But then aigain, I'm not 100% sure about that either...

Hi, Vulcan. Although this video was posted on youtube on May 24, 2013, the actual event happened in June, 2012. What is strange, osit, that I could find the exact date. On June 14, 2012 here _http://elcomercio.pe/actualidad/1428036/noticia-meteorito-extrano-objeto-envuelto-fuego-fue-visto-cielo-puno, this event was already reported with the video posted, but here _http://teatrevesadespertar.wordpress.com/2012/06/16/peru-extrano-objeto-envuelto-en-fuego-cae-en-junio-de-2012/, it says it happened on June 15, 2012. The name of a person, who shot the video is Cristian Palomino García.

Thanks for the info, Olesya. :) No wonder I couldn't find any other corroborating reports on this event.
