Greetings,
We were awoken by the sound of an earthquake, http://www.iris.edu/ds/nodes/dmc/tools/event/4766403, before we felt it this morning. The only comparison I can make is the sound of a freight train piercing the still night air. The dogs started barking and then the earthquake rolled across the island from north to south. It felt like the way waves move on the ocean in a rolling manner. Lots of shaking, but no damage observed yet. We are subjected to many small tremors a day. Most people do not sense them. Their gentle trembles are much preferred to this morning's awakening.
We live on a volcanic island with one the best harbors in the world which is actually the mouth of a sunken volcano. People and scientist say it is inactive. However, I'm not so sure because there is almost always a sulfur smell in the air on certain parts of the island. Our geographic conditions also subject us to tectonic plate action. I'm still looking into the ties between earthquakes and volcanoes. Learning not to fear these tremors because they are not under my control and breathing and going with the wave was actually calming.
