Mexico Earthquake 2013: Moderate Quake Hits Southern Mexico

03/26/13 10:00 AM ET EDT AP

MEXICO CITY — Earthquakes shook a broad swath of southern Mexico on Tuesday, causing buildings to sway in the capital and sending thousands fleeing into the streets as quake alarms sounded. But there were no immediate reports of damages or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said a magnitude-5.5 quake hit at 7:04 a.m. (9:04 a.m. EDT; 1304 GMT), centered about 10 miles (17 kilometers) west-southwest of Pinotepa Nacional on the Pacific Coast and 227 miles (365 kilometers) south-southeast of Mexico City.

Mexico Seismology Service initially calculated the quake's magnitude at 5.9.

A second quake struck near the same spot eight minutes later, also setting off alarms in the capital and causing people to evacuate tall buildings in the capital. The USGS calculated the magnitude of that quake at 5.1.

Mexico City's soft soil and geology make it especially sensitive to distant earthquakes. But Mayor Manuel Mancera said in a Twitter post that no damage was reported. Local news media also said there were no reports of damage close to Pinotepa Nacional.

I felt it, news outlets were quick to report that apparently there was no harm done either to people or buildings but I will keep a watch on this. The reported magnitude was 5.9 though.

There was another earthquake almost an hour ago, that was felt in Mexico City, fortunately I did not felt it :), I knew about it in the news later.
I hope those who live around are OK.

A couple of earthquakes more to the list ... I did not felt them, though, I got a little anxious in the second one.

The first one was (from USGS) August 21, 3013 (Guerrero's State)

In this one, I was asleep and did felt anything, a ring phone sounded, it was my sister, she was in a hotel, here in Mexico City and she felt it at the four floor, she was scared. I comment her that I will turn on the TV and see/hear what the news would probably say.

And minutes later, from the TV a hear for the first time, the famous earthquake's alarm many people had talked about, the TV guy was saying that we have 45 second to leave the building in a clam way, because is something we are prepared for etc ... so I leave the apartment and went outside in pyjamas with my preparedness bagpack (papers, water, food etc..., did not felt anything and I was the only one outside, at I supposed it happends here, since we feel any kind of shaking from the trains, cargo buses etc.... earthquakes passed unnoticed. In the minutes I was outside trying to perceive the earthquake, I realized I did not bring my tobacco cigarettes!!! ... went back inside and the first thing I did, was to put inside the backpack a pack of cigarettes :
