Multiple People Shot, 1 Dead Near Empire State Building

This may or may not be relevant considering what we know about so called "random shootings."

The incident happened only an hour ago, so there's more news likely to develop.

I walked by the location and it's quite a scene of emergency vehicles, policemen everywhere, helicopters overhead, news vehicles, and of course a throng of spectators.

At least 10 people were shot when gunfire broke out at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue around 9 a.m. Friday. Police said the gunman was shot and killed. A weapon was found near the body, police said.

There is a large police presence in the area. The FBI has also responded.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene.

“I was sitting outside and I heard three shots first and I saw three people running up to Park Avenue way from the Empire State Building,” one woman told CBS 2. “Then we heard it again and it was like 10 to 15 shots at one time. Then we saw the whole block, like over 50 people running to Park Avenue.”

“I started to see cop cars screaming down Fifth Avenue and 34th Street was all closed off,” another witness said.

Some of the victims were reportedly found inside the lobby of the Empire State Building while some were found on the street, CBS 2 reported.

At least one of those wounded is in critical condition. The conditions of the other victims are unknown. It’s still not clear what led to the shooting.

Fifth Avenue is closed between 23rd Street and 42nd Street. Traffic on 34th Street eastbound is closed form Park Avenue to Fifth Avenue. Traffic is closed on 34th Street westbound from Fifth to Sixth Avenue.
