Murder accused 'wrote 666 on arm'

A father killed four members of his family in Newcastle the day after he wrote 666 on his arm, a court has heard.

Neil Crampton, 36, hacked to death his daughter Abigail, 12, son Steven, five, their mother Olufunke Sobo, 36, and her brother Yemi, 41, after a row with his estranged partner, Miss Sobo.

The taxi driver denies murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

He killed them at the Sobo family home in Kenton in November 2006.

Dr Kim Fraser, a consultant forensic psychiatrist, told the court that the day before the murders "he had written the number 666 on his arm".

"He told me that he couldn't think why he had done this," the expert said.

The defence said Crampton was paranoid about Miss Sobo, also known as Liz, having an affair with one of his friends, but the court heard there was no evidence to support this.

The couple had an on-off relationship since the birth of their son in 2001, and he was intensely jealous of her being with other men, the court heard.

On one occasion he went round to the friend's house, armed with a knife, and intended to kill him.

Dr Fraser said Crampton told him: "He (the friend) said he was not interested in Liz, at this point I managed to calm myself down."

The court heard how Crampton was a heavy cannabis user who had had a breakdown in 2000, shortly before Steven's birth.

His mother Ann told the court how the only child could not sleep after the death of his aunt Joan in 1999.

She said: "He thought his aunt Joan was trying to contact him.

"He said he was hearing voices."

He spent up to £50 a week on cannabis, and took other drugs, including a powerful amphetamine called yabba, while travelling in Asia.

Earlier, the court heard Crampton could not explain why he did not spare his children's lives after stabbing the adults downstairs.
