Notification E-mail potential problem

Palinurus

The Living Force
I'm bringing this one up just in case it should be necessary to look into this, review it and eventually correct it.

Recently, Data sent me a PM with the log in info for the Historical Events Database website. All fine and dandy.

I also received a notification E-mail about this PM.

You have just been sent a personal message by Data on Cassiopaea Forum.

IMPORTANT: Remember, this is just a notification. Please do not reply to this email.

The message they sent you was:

[...]

After the colon followed what I will not repeat here

1. the active url of the database website
2. the log in name
3. the password

This may have been a personal message, but a private one is a totally different matter.

I bring this up because I feel it's not completely in order that this info would be transported unencrypted over the open interwebs, potentially for anyone to see. More over, I am not able to log in properly on said website at the moment using the info from the PM -- which I have signaled here and here.

There doesn't have to exist a connection between these two states of affair but I'm just wondering if there could be one...

Thanks for reading.

Which e-mail provider/domain do you use? I'm asking because some are more prone to viruses and bugs, spam, etc than others.

Simply put, some are less secure from these things, the NSA/CIA/PTB will read it no matter what e-mail provider AFAIK but the viruses is what concerns me in this instance.

My account (hotmail) was hacked recently also via my phone and I still can't access my mail on my phone to this day for example. They left no trace, no evidence, (no outgoing e-mails in the Sent Folder) I can thank a friend of mine who wrote back to me, asking if I had sent him the spam e-mail, which I hadn't. But that was simply spam and jeopardizing my contacts.

Maybe Data could change the password and send you the info here on the forum while you disable e-mail notifications so it wouldn't get to your inbox on your e-mail account could help?

Hi Nuke and thanks for posting your thoughts, experiences and suggestions. Sorry to hear about your recent predicament.

Notification E-mails are received via Windows Live Mail.
It's an account I only use for business like mail traffic and it has no address book or contacts list that could be used for spamming purposes.

I will be awaiting further instructions from the techies here before actually doing anything at all about this potential problem.

Well, if indeed you couldn't use the log in info because of the e-mail provider, that would, in a way confirm my hunch that Windows Live, Hotmail, Outlook (anything by Microsoft) is more easily susceptible to attacks from spammers/hackers.

Hope your situation will be resolved soon, best of luck.

Thanks for your concerns, Nuke.

That situation had a different cause altogether and has been resolved by now. See here if you want to know the details.

Thanks for the link, Palinurus. Glad it wasn't a security issue after all and that it worked out :)
