Obama black accent

I just heard an interesting subject on the radio. A linguist say that Obama has the capacity to change his voice according to his audience.
He use a "black accent" only when he want. The "black accent" is a subtle intonation with vowels for what I remember. This make me think of this :

A: There are frequencies in your/our voice that are inaudible to the physical ear but affect the spirit.

Q: (Joe) True. (Scott) I wonder if that's why there are certain bands where the people totally can't sing, but everyone thinks they're great - I mean, above and beyond marketing and all that kind of stuff?

A: Yes! And some of them activate "interesting" frequencies!

Q: (L) When you say "interesting", what does that mean?

A: Shall we say that it is planned and deliberate for nefarious purposes.

This is interesting.

In recent months, I have noticed a friend of mine drop into a Midwestern/Canadian accent (much like Sarah Palin's) but did not say anything. She has been working through some tough issues and I was thinking it may be related to that. (For example, one of my I's has a west Texas accent and when I work on issues related to that, the accent comes out).

But yesterday, we were on the phone and she told me she has been purposely using it to "mock" her ex-boyfriend as he is such a Palin fan. She says he never really noticed but seems to actually like her more when she uses that accent. We got to talking about the sound of that accent and whether or not it is part of the attraction of so many people for Palin. I was thinking how when I hear the accent, I think of apple pie and cornfields...

My take on the above C's transcript is that they are referring more to the actual "flavor" of the voice (something that can't be helped). What I believe the linguist was referring to is that change in the way words themselves are spoken so as to make others feel more comfortable as in "I'm one of you." People from different cultures/regions do this all the time. They have a professional speaking voice for the general public and a more "at home" way of speaking for those they know or who are from a similar culture. Hope that makes sense. :)

That was my impression as well, FWIW.

Same here. I wouldn't be surprised to discover that a "President" (for example), who supposedly represents the country, would likely be offered speech coaching in order to develop a neutral kind of accent similar to the "nothing-in-particular-Midwestern" accents many national newscasters seem to be trained to speak with (so the accent doesn't detract from the effectiveness of the propaganda?).

Yep, I'm sure it's done with celebrities as well as newscasters to add "legitimacy". I've been told this is how it is in other countries as well. As for American politicians, they may have a bit more leeway (think Kennedy and Clinton). I think they leave it alone for the most part to add a sort of down home appeal.

I agree too. I don't know if this is necessarily considered being phony or fitting into your environment -- like utilizing one of your I's for a specific aim perhaps? In some cases though I think people do it to influence the way others think. A deception, if you will. IMO, this is what Obama is doing but we all know what a fraud he is anyway.
