Obama signs defense bill, pledges to maintain legal rights of terror suspects

"HONOLULU — President Obama expressed misgivings about several provisions of a sweeping defense bill he signed into law on Saturday, pledging that his administration will use broad discretion in interpreting the measure’s legal requirements to ensure that U.S. citizens suspected of terrorism are not detained indefinitely by the military."

The white house has perfect timing, while most Americans are simply thinking about how trashed they can get tonight; Obama signed the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act of 2012) today which essentially means that the fascist point of no return for America is officially here beyond a shadow of a doubt. Any American citizen can now be rounded up (anywhere in the world including America) and tortured indefinitely without trial. This will affect everyone.

“By signing this defense spending bill, President Obama will go down in history as the president who enshrined indefinite detention without trial in U.S. law,” Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, said after Congress approved the bill.

Not the next administration of course. What shameful presidential legacy; same as the old boss. :pinocchio:

He must have forgotten all about his ability as president to "Line Item Veto" anything in an appropriations bill... Go figure...

Yeah, he loaded the gun but promised to be a good boy and not pull the trigger. Guess we can sleep peacefully then. :(

"President Obama expressed misgivings"?!?!

One of darkest days in US history. But US citizens aren't worried. Parties to go to, bowl games to watch, plenty of time to waste. Besides it will only happen to the bad guys, right?

No, this doesn't surprise me, but Holy Christ...

Those of us in the anti-fracking movement are very worried about this bill. Homeland Security is passing on information to the gas companies.

I'm not experiencing this at all. I talk to a lot of people and everyone is worried, everyone is noticing what's going on, and everyone is just trying to hold on to what they have: job, penison, home, medical care, clean water, clean air. a good school for their kids, social security, medicaid, medicare...

And there are so many issues - each of them crucial.

I don't fault people for trying to get a little pleasure out of life in these difficult times. That is one way to fight back, I think.

Thanks, Webglider: You're right. I made some sweeping generalizations in my comment. Many are concerned about this act, I know.

We each need to do the work before us and find joys where we can.

I know right? I thought for sure he was going to at least veto some insignificant part to make himself look like he was responding to the millions of people who have registered protests.

Just another sign that his masters don't care who gets elected in 2012.

Exactly. Like his predecessor, he is not in charge!

Yeah, the Corporate monarchy controls it all, that's a given. What this makes me wonder is if they've stopped fighting among themselves so much, which would be VERY bad for the rest of us.

I think what Mac was getting at here is that there are so many people who just turn a blind eye and wishfully think it will all be ok. They help themselves to do that by dissociating into sports and parties etc. That's hardly a way to "fight back". Quite the opposite in face.

Yeah, I agree.

Though I think that Obama has been totally setup to win the upcoming elections. I mean look at the competition. Romney, and Gingrich... and a bunch of others who are barely contenders...

And then there is Ron Paul - and although he's been doing surprisingly good, somehow I don't see him being put into power by the PTB. I think it's just like in 2008, where they gave the people 2 horrible choices (Cain/Palin) so you'd have to choose the lesser of two evils. And so now it's the same with Romney and Gingrich, osit.

I never thought he was going to veto it anyway, just doesn't seem like something he'd do out of the goodness of his heart.

I have my doubts that the 2012 election will even occur. I figure that if we are knee deep in a pandemic, WWIII, or massive civil unrest by election time; the PTB just might pull the plug on the charade. I think Ron Paul has absolutely no chance and only serves as the "savior" distraction. They give people a savior like Obama or Paul so that people don't have to focus on saving themselves and each other. Libertarians who like Ron Paul are buying into this savior program just as much as anyone else and they are the ones who supposedly advocate limiting the mommy state/gov.

Elections are completely rigged and I think the main purpose is to divide people and give people something to fight each other over. If there is an election, I agree with you in that Obama will "win".

I realize this is starting to go very off topic and so maybe it should be split into a "2012 election?" thread?
