This seems weird, not sure what to make of it:

One man has been shot dead and two policemen have been stabbed in Melbourne's outer south-east, in an incident involving a joint Victoria Police and Australian Federal Police counter-terrorism taskforce.

The two stabbed officers were from the Joint Counter Terrorism Team. One of the men was from Victoria Police while the other was an officer with the Australian Federal Police.

One of the stabbed officers was rushed to The Alfred in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries, while the other man was taken to nearby Dandenong Hospital in a less serious condition suffering stab wounds to the arms.

Onlookers at the scene – who did not want to be named – said the dead man had been shouting insults at Prime Minister Tony Abbott and the Australian government in general in the moments before he was shot.

The man was reportedly pulled over in the vicinity of the Endeavour Hills police station before lashing out at the two officers with a sharp instrument. He then ran towards the police station, and was shot. It is unknown whether either of the two officers who were stabbed, or a third officer, shot the man.

Police have set up a crime scene around the perimeter of the nearby Endeavour Hills shopping centre.

A crowd of about 50 onlookers had gathered at the scene around 10pm. A heavy police presence was at the scene, with around a dozen officers directing onlookers to leave.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police were called to a location on Heatherton Road in Endeavour Hills around 7.30pm on Tuesday.

The spokeswoman said the incident occurred "very near to the police station".

She said the station was functioning as normal.

Shafi Miya, who works at the petrol station opposite the Endeavour Hills police station, said he heard a shot fired sometime between 7.30pm and 8pm.

He said police have taped off the police station and Heatherton Rd is closed in both directions.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed that paramedics attended the scene but would not provide further details.

So it had something to do with "Anti-terrorism" :

...in an incident involving a joint Victoria Police and Australian Federal Police counter-terrorism taskforce.

The two stabbed officers were from the Joint Counter Terrorism Team. One of the men was from Victoria Police while the other was an officer with the Australian Federal Police.

Yet this bloke was pulled over on a busy road next to a shopping mall!

The man was reportedly pulled over in the vicinity of the Endeavour Hills police station before lashing out at the two officers with a sharp instrument. He then ran towards the police station, and was shot. It is unknown whether either of the two officers who were stabbed, or a third officer, shot the man.

Rather puzzling. Also this actually happened between 3 and 4 hours ago, so there's not a lot to go on.

Very near where I live, too.

this from abc news:

A person who reportedly made threats against the Prime Minister has been shot dead and two police officers from the joint counter terrorism team have been stabbed in Melbourne's outer south-east.

The ABC understands the dead man was considered a "person of interest" by authorities and was being investigated over terrorism.

It is also believed he recently had his passport cancelled.

The incident occurred as the man arrived at a police station on Heatherton Road in Endeavour Hills about 7:40pm (AEST) on Tuesday.

He had been asked to attend an interview as part of an investigation.

An altercation with officers took place outside the station when he arrived.

One of the officers who was stabbed is from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the other is a Victoria Police member.

They have both been rushed to hospital and one is in a critical but stable condition.

The AFP is expected to issue a statement shortly and Victoria Police are also expected to speak to the media this evening.

Paramedics confirmed they attended the scene but would not comment on the condition of the stabbing victims.

A large number of uniformed and plain clothes officers were at the scene late on Tuesday night, with officers interviewing witnesses from a nearby shopping centre.

Part of Heatherton Road remained closed.

The incident has occurred amid heightened tensions following last week's counter-terrorism raids in Sydney and Brisbane.

On Monday, Prime Minister Tony Abbott warned Australians the balance between freedom and security "may have to shift", given the current "troubling" and "darkening" security situation.

In Canberra on Tuesday, AFP officers armed with assault rifles could be seen outside Parliament House.

The decision to post the heavily-armed police officers outside Parliament House was taken by Speaker Bronwyn Bishop and President of the Senate Stephen Parry based on advice from security agencies.
