Out-of-body appearance

The Living Force
I am not sure it this is in the right category, but it was the best fit for my anecdote and question as far as I can tell. I also couldn't find another thread that looked appropriate, but if I missed it somehow, moderators please feel free to attach it where it needs to go.

I've been meaning to ask about this for some time, but I always forget about it when I'm logged-on. First, let me tell the story:

Last spring (2008), my parents came to visit my family for a week or so during spring break. It happened to occur during a time in my life that was especially emotionally stressful, and that may have something to do with what happened, I'm not sure. They returned home at the end of the week, and everything went back to normal. A couple of days later, I talked to my mom on the phone and she was rather taken-aback by what had happened during the previous night.

According to her description, she woke up in the middle of the night and had to go to the bathroom, and wasn't able to go back to sleep. She was laying on her back, when she said that suddenly she saw me standing in the doorway (at the time, I was at home, in another state, asleep myself as far as I know). She said that I looked the same, except I had longer hair and was dressed formally in a black suit (very much not my regular attire). I proceeded to cross the room in front of her (she couldn't see my feet from her vantage point and said I seemed to be sort of walking and floating at the same time), go over to her bookshelf, and look through the books until I apparently found what I was looking for. I then returned the way I came and exited, never acknowledging her at any point in time.

When she described the event to me on the phone the next morning, she said that she was sure that she wasn't dreaming, was in fact wide awake (especially after I appeared), and couldn't go back to sleep for more than an hour and a half after this happened because it alarmed her so much. All I remember is being asleep, and I didn't even remember what I had dreamt about the night before

To the best of my knowledge, I've never had any out-of-body experiences, and my mom isn't senile or prone to imagining things, especially like this; it also hasn't happened since. I'm not concerned about it, but I have been curious since it happened and was wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience, or might have an explanation. I do take out-of-body experiences seriously, but I have always been under the impression that the person who does it is the one who remembers the experience, not the one who gets visited (!)

Hey Shijing, just a question about the whole thing - did the other you actually take something from the bookshelf? Like, did other-you pick something up and leave with it?

Other then that it sounds kinda odd. I've never had an out-of-body deal and as far as I know, no one's ever seen me having one.

I don't think that my mom actually saw me walk away with a book after I was done doing whatever I was apparently doing at the bookshelf -- I asked her that at the time, because it would be really freaky if the books on the bookshelf had actually been moved :O I will double-check next time I talk with her, but I think everything was left as she remembered it.

I'm not sure exactly what to say, but that is very strange. I'd be curious, too, if it moved.

But what strikes me the most is that you did not appear as you normally do - both hair and dress different.

Hmm... odd. I wish I could think of more that could be of use, but it would seem LESS odd to me if you looked like your usual self.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The only thing I can possibly think of is that maybe it was sort of an idealized representation -- I did have longer hair in the past, for several years. I have never owned a black suit though

So I talked to my mom about this yesterday, and to my surprise, she didn't remember any of it. Her memory is generally very good (although she is sometimes selective about unpleasant things), so this caught me off-guard. Just to make sure I wasn't going crazy, I asked my wife if she remembered me mentioning this after it happened, and she did -- she even corrected me on one detail:

My wife remembers me saying that my hair was basically the same as it is now, so I remembered that wrong -- so the suit was different, but my physical features weren't any different than they are now. FWIW.

Wow!
That's spooky! :O
So your mom, after she told you her dream next time you talked to her she didn't remember?!?
OMG! :scared:
Strange...very strange.

Yes -- actually, the whole reason that this is weird is that my understanding is that this was not a dream. It happened over a year ago, so if it was a dream then having forgotten it would be pretty normal. The thing is, the morning my mom first told me about the experience, she was freaked out because she was sure that she had been awake when she saw me. It would be out of character for her to make that kind of mistake (confusing being asleep with being awake), but for an experience that odd, it is sort of strange that she can't remember a thing about it.

My first thought after reading your original post was that there was some kind of bleed-through or merge of you in an alternate parallel reality that your mom witnessed. That would explain the "you" in completely different clothing. I have know idea how it could happen but things of this nature have been mentioned numerous times on this forum and in the transcripts as well if you look for it. Funny the same sort of experience happened with me and my mother only I believe what she witnessed was a ghost or "dead dude" bothering me while I slept. She says she'll never forget it.

Good luck figuring it all out-hope that helps a bit!
