Page loading problems ...

Hi all,

In recent times I have been unable to read all the posts of one thread, because my browser doesn't seem to load the whole page. Often a post would be cut in half and often I would be unable to see the last post. I have tried different browsers (Safari/ Firefox) and it doesn't seem to make a difference.
Otherwise I use a Mac and I am on a fairly slow satellite connection - don't know if this has anything to do with my problem ...

Has anyone had the same problem or anyone a good idea how to rectify this?

Thanks

Nicklebleu

It could be their are images in the thread in reference. Sometimes it takes a while for them to load and causes the whole page to load slowly, especially on a slow connection like you have.

Pinkerton: I don't think it's the images loading slowly, because the pages loads fully (as indicated by the "Done" in the menu bar), but incomplete.
Los: That's not what I experience either. The don't load blank, but the post is truncated at the end of the page, so I can't scroll down any further.
Not sure what the problem is - seems to be on the SOTT pages only ...!?!
Thanks anyway!

That happens from time to time, try CTRL + F5.

Hi Nickelbleu,

I've been having the same problem intermittently for some time now; even on the Cass site, sometimes pages from 'The Wave' won't download fully and I have to ask other forum members to post the missing portions.

The speed of my internet connection is 52.0 kbps, whatever that means. This is not happening all the time or on every page. For instance, one day a page won't download fully, and then the next day it will!

Some really good tips and suggestions about this are posted here . Maybe one of them will work for you.

Thanks bedower, will try these things ...
Does this happen to you on other sites than those associated with SOTT/ Cass etc?

No, just the SOTT/Cass sites.

Nothing suggested by other forumites has worked, either!

And it's really annoying!

Have you ever considered upgrading to a broadband internet connection like cable or DSL? The speed above sounds like you are on dial-up, and that may be one of the factors for the problems you are encountering. Lost connections happen regularly on dial-up.

Pinkerton,

I am currently on a satellite "broadband" connection of 354 kbps (shared) but have at home an ADSL-2+ connection with at least 8 Mbps - but I see the same thing happening at both sites - I have the impression, that speed may not be the main problem here ...

Just my 2c worth ...

Hi nickleblue

Are you using the same pc/laptop on the satellite and adsl? If so it may be that the common link in this problem is the pc/laptop.
If that's the case, it could be many things.

You mention a mac? I was going to suggest you run a virus scan, but I'm not sure how susceptible macs are to viruses.

Having had a look around google, I can't find anything relating to mac's having problems with SMF forums. Perhaps (and macs are generally out of my knowledge range) its a security/plugin issue? Perhaps there is a way to get the browser/mac to log if there are problems/errors its running into?

Er...um...touch wood and everything...

I hesitate about posting this, just in case I call down that pesky General Law on my head, but...

...my complete page download problem seems to have cleared up (sounds like a medical complaint!) so even thread pages with pictures and lots of quote excerpts are downloading fully, whereas they didn't before. It seems like 'The Wave' is ok too; I went into a page I'd had previous problems with - 11c - and that was fine.

Just thought you guys and gals would like to know.

I'm still hesitating about posting this though!

:/

I have also experienced this on the forum pages with Firefox. When I switched to IE 7.0, the pages loaded up fine. This might be an issue with the forum software as I have experienced a similar problem on another forum too. I am on a quite speedy broadband just in case.

Have found out a few things in this bizarre saga ...

I (unfortunately have to) operate my browser from behind a corporate proxy server. When I use Firefox through the network adapter configured to handle the proxy authentication, I have page loading problems.

If however I switch to Opera and let this browser handle the proxy authentication, then I don't have page loading problems at all!

Very bizarre, and just a little bit annoying, as I have to switch back and forth between settings - but only minor inconvenience ... :)
