Paleolithic Diet -- Anyone tried it???

theos

The Living Force
After reading "The Origins of Argriculture. Did Civilization Arize to Deliver a Fix?" on the signs page, I decided to try the Paleolithic Diet. I notice that eating carbs only makes me want to eat more an more carbs. I feel totally bloated and sluggish.

Has anyone out there tried it? If so, whaddya think.

Yes, I am doing pretty much the same kind of diet, which is the Blood Type Diet for Type O's. I too felt sluggish after eating breads, pastas, etc... Basically what you should avoid, if that is how you feel and especially if you are Type O, is anything made from wheat. After altering my diet to primarily eat meat and vegetables and avoiding wheat-based foods and dairy, I feel more energy throughout the day. I would recommend the diet to all Type O's, and to others who just want to avoid the foods which have been introduced fairly recently which are really not that beneficial to people at all.

Our family is on the same type of no carb diet beau described above, the Blood Type diet for Type O's, my husband has extreme stomach problems and a Naturopath doctor recommended cutting all wheat, corn, dairy and soy products from his diet. He has had tremendous results in loosing weight and has much less painful stomach cramps.
As for myself I am a B Blood Type but I suffer from major allergies, ever since childhood. I began experiencing terrible migraine headaches several years ago, I knew a regular doctor would prescribe a migraine medication or painkiller, hence I choose to see the Naturopathic doctor, she shared that I had a strong allergic aversion to wheat and dairy products and eating these types of foods was what was causing these migraines, she put me on a month long cleanse and advised that I cut all these foods (wheat, soy, corn and dairy) from my diet and let her know if my headaches went away. Sure enough I have not experienced a migraine for several months. But when I do eat wheat and dairy by the 3rd or 4th day I begin to feel the migraine sensations again.
It is amazing how the body reacts to foods we eat and how the body 'warns' us when we are eating foods that cause pain and discomfort.
I have shared these experiences with friends and family and the response I always get is "what do you eat?" I share that we live mostly on rice, meats, fruits and veggies. Grocery shopping becomes a chore though because most products in the grocery store contain wheat, corn and dairy. It takes experimentation and diligence but I think most will find that the benefits are worth the sacrifices. There are many cookbooks out on the market that have wonderful recipes for people who choose this type of alternative diet.

Tell me about it. I never really realized how much wheat and flour is used in cooking until I chose to eliminate it from my diet. It certainly takes a lot of diligence and experimentation to do the diet, but when we realize that wheat was essentially introduced into our diet as a poison, it makes it a little easier to be diligent :). A few things that I have found at the health food store and which is good for Type O's or others avoiding wheat are rice grain-based breads, Essene bread, and spelt flour. They do not seem to have the after-effects on me as wheat does.

I don't know if this is applicable where you're at but I know of one super market chain (Whole Foods) that offers a list of their gluten free products. This could be the case with some other grocery stores but I don't know. Whole Foods is a bit expensive though, if anyone can find a Trader Joe's close by, I highly recommend them! Awesome food (and they have some sections with gluten free products) with great prices.

When I first told the kids that I would like to try the paleo diet ,I called it eating like stone age people, they said: 'what? no forks?
Now when I go to the super market it becomes a foraging trip.I hunt through the ailes searching for food free from wheat, gluten ,soy, msg, artificial sweetener etc.
In a lot of cases I put it back after reading the ingridience list ,but you still can fill a trolly if you take the time .I really like to try and make some pemmican one of these days. I also embarked on a series of colonics to get rid of the 'crap' still glueing up my insides
happy hunting RRR

When I cut out wheat, corn and dairy, I was able to feel the results in a few days (2 or 3).
Results: woke up in better mood, no allergic reactions (stuffiness, sneazing, mucus), more energy.
later I gave up all artificial (non pronounceable), sweetners like corn syrup (it's everywhere) & fructose etc...

conventional store - if the ingredients are more than a sentence or smaller than 6point letters, I'm not buying it.

at the begining it was hard and extremley frustrating to go to the supermarket even health food stores (stuff there has msg & corn syrup too)
great rice pasta texture & taste "tinkyada" ricepasta.com

I know what you mean: Sometimes I cheat and eat dairy (cheese or ice cream). My mouth/brain want it, but depending on type of dairy, I have instant allergic reactions, next day or days later. ie: sharp cheddar a few hours/next day, mozzarella 2 or 3days later

The Wheat/Corn & Dairy Religion (j/k)
I didn't know trying to cut wheat/corn was an emotional rollacoaster. People get insulted and angry like I was offending their religion. I learned to answer most questions by saying "I'm just wierd like that" or "I just feel like not having any" than actually explaining why (in neutral tone, ok sometimes I got over excited happy) no matter how or what i said they got angry or ran the other way (internally or physically). Only two people actually seemed ok with knowing and one has surpassed me. I feel bad witholding information that may help people (especially kids, over medicated benadril or suffering), i have to learn how know when to give information and how to ask for it too.

P.S. Thanks to this web site & the Internet my health is better and getting better every day.

edit: oops copy paste BBcode James to Erykah

Thanks for all the info. Today was my first full day and my stomach growled almost non-stop -- a real change of pace for me. However, I didn't feel super-ravenous like when I go a long time between meals with carbs.

I would love eat rice but I think I'm going to be really strict here and see how it goes.

It looks paleo diet went viral. so does the damage control

the first diet is paleo diet in this
Let's face it: Hollywood makes losing weight look easy! Especially with all those toned bodies walking the red carpet this awards season. But if shedding a few pounds is on your to-do list, don't be so quick to follow in the footsteps of your favorite celebs.

Here are 4 popular celebrity diets to be wary of:

1. Paleo Diet
Megan Fox is rumored to have followed this diet, also called the Caveman Diet. On the Paleo Diet, you're supposed to eat like your ancestors, which means eating a lot of animal protein, "natural" carbohydrates (essentially fruits and vegetables) and some nuts.

The Paleo Diet is high in protein and fat-and there's an emphasis on getting health-sustaining omega-3s into your diet from oily fish like wild salmon, game meats, free-range chicken and grass-fed beef, all of which can be pricier than their farmed or conventionally raised counterparts.

What's interesting about this diet is that its phases are the opposite of most other diets in that they get more restrictive as you progress. For example, at the first level, you get 3 "open" or cheat meals a week, plus what they call "transitional items," such as condiments to flavor food. But when you move to level 2, you only get 2 "open" meals a week and you phase out the transitional items. This type of transition might make it easier to stick to.

What's missing?
Dairy, which is how most of us get our calcium and vitamin D. The Paleo Diet is also low in carbohydrates-and there's research that shows limiting or eliminating carbs impacts your memory and your mood.
Not sure where these people got this calcium and vitamin D , memory and your mood

The Bottom Line:
Celebs are fans of these diets because they do work to slim you down quickly. But they work because they are so restrictive-when you cut out certain food groups from your diet, it's hard to make up for those lost calories by eating more of other foods groups. That's why you lose the weight: you're eating fewer calories. Following these diets can help you kick-start your diet and motivate you to transition and stick to a more balanced, healthy diet. But following them for too long means you'll miss out on key nutrients.

read the comments below. Lot of people are supporting paleo diet and ridiculing the writers credentials calling article Bull etc.

This is really amazing information.
My country has very fruitful soil. Even during the Second World War, as we have been tought, the Nazis have been taking the black soil out of Ukraine to Germany by trains.(I don't know how to say 'chornozem' in English\ here is the link to wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernozem)
We have a lot of wheat and potatoes here. I used to eat wheat's and potatoes for my entire life. Potato is like 'second bread' here, especially in the countryside. As I understood eating a lot of potatoes is also not good, because it has a lot of carbohydrates? And what about rye bread?

My blood type is O positive. I almost eliminate wheat and dairy products. On first or second day, after I did it, I had a feeling of some sort of 'detoxing'.( I don't know how to explain it correctly). I also feel more energy. I think that I should decrease eating potato to minimum.
I noticed that from time to time I feel a thirst for iron. It feels like I want to eat iron almost literally. As I understand, it is my body gives me a clue. I very like to eat meat, especially pork's and beef. Even eating chicken's, duck's and turkey meat doesn't help so much to quench my 'iron thirst' as pork's and beef. I also very like to eat lard.

edit: one of my friends very likes potatoes. He can eat it twice or trice a day. And he also like to lay on the bead, and to sleep a lot in the day time.
I also need to sleep 9-10, sometimes 11-12 hours. I don't want to sleep so much. I'd like to sleep 7-8 hours. May it be caused be high carbohydrates food, especially potatoes?

Hi Serg,

Our research and experience here have indicated that a lot of carbohydrate of any type is not good for us. Also, among the carbohydrate, grains seem to be the worst. All grains (including rye, corn, rice) contain gluten, which is very damaging to the body. And it so happens that even a minute amount of gluten can leave damages up to six months afterwards.

If you wish to change your diet to improve health, the first thing to do would be to totally eliminate grains and dairy. Remember that it has to be TOTAL, because as I mentioned earlier, even a small amount of gluten will do you damage for a long time. At the same time, read up on the Health and Diet section and the recommended books therein. Improving your health is a long road to travel and you will need all the knowledge you can get. Nevertheless, I can guarantee that you will not regret the effort you spend on it.

About your sleep, if you feel you need to sleep 11-12 hours a day, by all means, find the time to do it if possible. And it is important to sleep in complete darkness to get the best out of your sleep. After you have spent some time on a proper diet, you will find that you need less sleep.

Hi Bobo08,
Thanks for your reply and valuable information. I'll read more about health and diet.
And I'll try to follow your advice.
And by the way, I always found it very hard to sleep with any light on, or with any sounds around me
