People asking for paleo/ keto diet help

The Living Force
So something strange has began to happen around me. I've been working on getting my diet in order for about a year now. When I first started many people were either scoffing or making fun of me for what I was doing. Family and parents included.

Now, as of a few weeks ago, I think people are generally wanting me to help them now. It's a bit overwhelming with how many are asking. And actually, I was formally asked to give a presentation (on the 24th of December, not much time for preparation) on my findings and tips on how to get started by my in-laws. Now I say this is strange because it's been hitting me from all directions and from unexpected persons.

I want to be able to help and step up to the plate. Maybe a powerpoint? but then I realized this isn't an easy tell them how to do it and everything will be ok situation. I was only able to get where I am through lots of reading suggested by the forum. I'm not sure if it's possible to just explain these things to others without them wanting to read and delve into the situation that is their diet.

How do I proceed? I want to help but at the same time I don't want to lead anyone astray or babyfeed as I understand that it could make them worse off if they do not understand what they are doing. After realizing that you must read a lot of the diet info on the web with a filter, that will only come from your own independent research and experimentation, I felt as though that in and of itself cannot be conveyed in one sitting.

There is also another issue. Sometimes I have a hard time not using scientific jargon to explain what i'm thinking. This is probably a great area for me to work on relating to others and my system 2 (slow thinking), because otherwise i will be misunderstood which consequently leads to them being more alienated from information they are asking of me.

During the August-September 2012 research phase, I composed this summary document for printing:

That may be of help—it helped my family know what was 'acceptable' or not even though none of them care for the "gluten is bad / inflammatory" case.

Wow. I really appreciate it. That is comprehensive but concise and the colors help as well. Thank you!

Hi trendsetter37,

I think people start slowly to wake up to the fact that the SAD doesn't work well - it keeps you unhealthy and fat. Especially if you have changed the way you look, lost some weight or overcome some health issues with the KD, you will have people take note. This is what has happened to me. Everyone whom I haven't met for some times comments on this - they want to know how I do it, but as soon as I tell them that they have to leave out gluten, they think that it is too much for them to do, and they continue in their old ways ... Mostly people want a quick fix, a magic bullet.

When I started out with my diet changes I was preaching the gospel to anyone who wouldn't want to listen. Now I merely answer questions. Your inlaws have asked a question though, and I think you should attempt to answer it. Again I would go about in stages. The idea is not to give them a comprehensive lecture to enable them to go solo, but to outline the science and the benefits behind that. If they are truly interested, they will ask you more or want ot get other information. It is certainly worth giving them the usual book listing - Mark Sisson/ Lutz/ Nora Gedgaudas/ Volek & Phinney/ Lierre Keith etc.

I would try to outline the concept and ideas behind the KD and to give them an idea on what is involved. But I would also mention that it is only part of the whole picture - the rest being heavy metal detox, individual food allergies and sensitivities that need to be checked out, gut healing, yeast problems, stress reduction etc.

I have been thinking about doing such a PPT presentation for some time, but haven't been able to do it yet ...

Yes - what you could do fairly quickly is to grab a few good Keto/Paleo Sott articles and summarize them in PPT form using appropriate pics from the articles.

Here is a good article that boils down "foods to eat" and "foods to avoid" in a very straightforward way:

Most people need extremely easy guidelines like that one. You can customize the list according to priorities: paleo Vs ketogenic diet. :)

Ok that makes sense nicklebleu. Regarding being really outspoken at the outset but then thinking that was the wrong approach. Mostly based off of feedback.

Thank you LQB for that link. At the this point I can see that the best course of action would be to start slow with articles such as the one you gave (which definitely makes it easier) and allow for an open dialogue. And then just see how that goes.

Thanks for this thread, trendsetter37.
Something similar happens to me. I have been asked but what everybody need to know is long and varied. And above all, they must to read! Read a lot. And my family and friends do not read or just read things of their job. Reading is annoying for most of them. And your idea of a powerpoint is good, thinking that some people learn more in that way and watching videos than reading.

Very good idea. Thanks, LQB. I had also thought about starting to do some videos with researches, articles and news with their corresponding images and voice (the voice may enrich the understanding) but my level of programming is null and have to learn how to make stuff like that. Perhaps learn to do a decent PPT it's not so hard.
