My 7 yr old showing lot of interest in this percy Jackson books and reading 2 books a week, I was happy that he is reading some thing that interests him instead of watching the junk TV. Brief read on the story didn't gave any impression of positive or negative. I thought it is Just another popcorn story mixing of greek mythical characters with other tales. Does any body read it and have any impressions of it.?

I can't say I've read the book, but my 9 yr old daughter just finished it and loved it. She wants to continue reading the series.

We watched "The Lightning Thief" movie last night. While my daughter wasn't as impressed with the movie as she was the book, I thought the general story was good and really does a good job of making the older Greek myths interesting to the modern viewer, putting them in a context that most children would appreciate.

The idea that the gods making war represented by weather is mentioned in the film. I thought it was interesting that the war of the gods manifests as a huge storm system that covers all of North America and Norther Europe. It sounds kind of like the Mother of Storms/Ice Age projections that are discussed here.

Same impressions here. This series has a pretty low level of reading difficulty for book of its size (Lexile 740 I believe, which is a 4th grade equivalent), but the plot is intense and complicated enough to appeal to older children and young adults too, which makes it an all-around hit.
