At this very moment I have a fairly severe headache caused (I think) by coconut oil which smoked a bit when I was making buckwheat crepes earlier today. Apparently the stuff has the same effect on me as house-paint fumes (painful headache, not at all pleasant). Lesson learned. However, the pain caused me to think; to me, the pain is experienced as a sort of anguish, but what exactly IS pain? A purely physical description probably can not describe the "anguish" of physical pain. So what is the "mechanism" of this pain in terms of consciousness? It caused me to think about us as "reaction machines". To the machine, pain is a signal which opposes and acts as a deterrent against what the machine considers a threat to survival, as I understand it. So it is to the souled being who is Asleep, and to the Organic Portal, for whom Sleep is the natural state. However, for the psychopath, or perhaps some psychopaths, maybe this is not the case? And what about a person who is Awake or Awakening? Certainly pain will still exist for them, but I imagine pain becomes more bearable as one becomes more objective and learns how to interpret and respond to it? My experience is that pain is much more bearable now than it was when I was younger, and I feel I've made at least some tiny progress toward objectivity.
Intuitively it seems to me that pain represents some kind of "clash" or conflict within consciousness. Maybe the different kinds of pain indicate different kinds of stress on one's Being? Perhaps if such stress becomes to great, breaking occurs? Could this relate to "soul smashing"? The Soul can be "smashed" by causing a being to experience "Ultimate Suffering"? I remember once Laura said something like, "A planet that is suffering is a target for disaster." Perhaps the suffering and the destruction are not necessarily caused one by the other, but they are sides of the same coin? This is simply freeform speculation, though.
Hopefully this message is at least food for thought. For what it's worth... I am going to bed to try and sleep this headache off.
P.S. When I wrote the first sentence, I originally wrote, "...a severe headache caused by smoking coconut oil when I was making buckwheat crepes...", which caused me to burst out laughing when I read it (With this headache?! Ouch! :O ). I don't know how funny it might be to others, but there you have it. :P ;D
