Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End

Well, shiver me timbers and all that, but this movie didn't turn out anything like I expected.

What I expected, based my impressions from POTC II, was an average Hollywood, visually impressive, swashbuckling flick with no real depth or message. I certainly did NOT expect to find the film so rich in Esoteric symbology, political and social commentary, Work concepts, and even Hyperdimensional "Matrix-esque" metaphors. I couldn't help but wonder where the creative team behind this film were getting some of their ideas?

I won't go into specifics and spoilers yet as the movie has only just been released, but I'd be interested to see if other viewers received the same impression I did.

A movie well worth checking out!

After watching PotC II and almost not making it through the movie, I had written this one off as a don't even rent it and had gone as far as vowing to a roommate that I'll never watch the third one. Sounds like I should reconsider.

It was good, a little long and the side-plots seemed somewhat pointless.

IE they have this whole sideplot with this goddess calypso, but she really has such a minor role it makes me wonder why they bothered to include it.

There was a little secret clip @ the end after the credits, though it wasn't terribly shocking, i kinda guessed what it revealed (Elizabeth has a son!).

I saw PotC3 last night, and my impressions are

1. There is some deliberate political commentary in the storyline. (Not to give anything away for those who have not as yet seen it.)

2. There appears to be reference to esoteric ideas - work, enneagram, council of nine, etc, etc - but my impression is that this is largely accidental.

3. Too many sub-plots for its own good, as if the makers decided to give the audience more of everything as it might be the last PotC film (hopefully!).

A film that to my mind is an excellent allegory of the search for the self is, believe it or not, National Treasure - the one where Nicolas Cage has to prevent the theft of the Declaration of Independence.

I thought the movie was too "scattered". Too many people with too many agendas. I also couldn't help but notice that all the pirates except Will and Elizabeth were sweaty, dirty and had black teeth........that's Hollywood for ya!

Jack's situation at world's end was interesting I thought....not what I expected.

exactly my sentiments.
i really disliked the second one, the 1st one was solid but mindless entertainment (not that there is anything wrong with that ;) )

i might watch 'world's end' on dvd, but not in theaters - 3 hours in those seats is pure torture... not to mention you can't pause to go to the bathroom...

I would go for watching that movie on dvd as well, but can't. Will be seeing it with the family this weekend (and today is May 31st - Thursday). I don't like the theater much because they don't have closed captioned and I couldn't understand what was being said, tho.
