An American Airlines plane caught fire on the tarmac after landing at Denver International Airport with engine issues Thursday evening, forcing scores of passengers to evacuate the burning aircraft, authorities said.

Twelve people were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries after evacuating the Boeing 737-800, DIA spokesperson Michael Konopasek said.

Flight 1006 had departed from Colorado Springs and was headed to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport when it was diverted to Denver after the crew reported “engine vibrations,” according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Tracking data from Flight Aware shows the 737 left Colorado Springs at 4:52 p.m., diverted at 5:14 p.m. and landed in Denver at 5:55 p.m.

The plane landed safely and was taxiing when it experienced “an engine-related issue,” American Airlines spokesperson Brian Metham said in a statement.

The aircraft was at gate C38 when the fire started around 6 p.m., Konopasek said. Passengers were quickly evacuated with slides and the fire was extinguished, he said.

There were 172 passengers and six crew members on board, he said.


News of the fire spread quickly on social media after passengers posted videos of smoke billowing from the plane and passengers evacuating onto the wings. The FAA said passengers exited using slides.

“We thank our crew members, DEN team and first responders for their quick and decisive action with the safety of everyone on board and on the ground as the priority,” American Airlines said in a statement.

The FAA will investigate the incident.

The country has seen a recent spate of aviation disasters and close calls stoking fears about air travel, though flying remains a very safe mode of transport.

Recent on-the-ground incidents have included a plane that crashed and flipped over upon landing in Toronto and a Japan Airlines plane that clipped a parked Delta plane while it was taxiing at the Seattle airport.

Apparently he was a very straight forward and honest man. In the media however he is/was described as "right extremist" (the usual label for anyone who is critical). He flew alone in a small plane from Zagreb (Croatia) aiming to land in Switzerland (St Moriz), but his plane crashed over Slovenia.

Lunström inherited Swedish company Wasa (bread) back in the days, and was also the founder of the file-sharing site "The Pirate Bay".

Carl Lundstrom, the co-founder and early financial backer of file-sharing website The Pirate Bay, died after a small plane he was flying crashed in the Slovenian mountains.

Lundstrom, who was also a member of the far-right Alternative for Sweden party, was travelling from the Croatian capital of Zagreb to Zurich in Switzerland when his plane crashed.

The 64-year-old businessman was flying his Piper Mooney Ovation M20R, the party said, confirming reports of his death in a Facebook post on Tuesday. Lundstrom was alone in the plane, they added.

The propeller plane split into two after crashing into a wooden cabin in the Velika Planina mountain in the north of Slovenia on Monday. Bad weather prevented rescue teams from discovering the body and parts of the plane inside the cabin until Tuesday, AFP reported.

“Lundstrom, a legend and veteran of Swedish nationalism, died in a plane crash on Monday,” the far-right party wrote.

The plane likely crashed due to spatial disorientation in bad weather, local media website 24.ur reported. It added that the aircraft started spiralling downward from the altitude of 2.5km.

He was one of the early financial backers of The Pirate Bay, which was founded in 2003 to allow users to dodge copyright fees and share music and other files. His company Rix Telecom provided services and equipment to The Pirate Bay till 2005.

The Pirate Bay hit one million unique users in May 2006, the same month that Swedish police first raided its servers.

Lundstrom was one of the defendants charged with being an "accessory to breaching copyright law" when the website was dragged to court for promoting copyright infringement. He was sentenced to prison in 2012 and handed down heavy fines along with other founders.

However, following an appeal, his prison sentence was shortened to four months instead of one year.

Lundstrom also financed the Swedish Progress Party in 1991, which later merged with the Sweden Democrats. The Alternative for Sweden said Lundstrom joined the far-right party in 2018 and contested the 2021 Assembly election, which he lost.

Lundström was also the heir to a Swedish ‘crispbread’ brand known as Wasabröd, the Metro reported.

At least 12 people have been killed after a plane crashed off the Caribbean coast of Honduras on Monday evening, officials said.

The aircraft - operated by Honduran airline Lanhsa - crashed into the sea within a minute of take-off from the island of Roatán.

The Honduran national police and fire department separately said five people had been rescued, while one person is yet to be found.

The cause of the crash is not yet known, but Roatán's mayor told local media it wasn't because of the weather, which was normal. The Honduran Civil Aeronautics Agency said an investigation was under way.
The Jetstream 32 aircraft had taken off from the island's Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport at 18:18 local time (00:18 GMT on Tuesday), and was bound for Golosón International Airport in La Ceiba on the Honduran mainland.

Civil aviation official Carlos Padilla said, quoted by AFP news agency, that the plane "made a sharp turn to the right of the runway and fell into the water".

In a statement on social media, the government expressed "solidarity" with the families of the victims.

"The Government of Honduras deeply regrets the tragic accident in Roatán and joins in the national mourning," it added.

Following the crash, Honduran President Xiomara Castro "immediately activated" the country's emergency committee, comprised of all emergency services including the military, police, fire department, Red Cross and the Ministry of Health.

Writing on X, she said the committee team was "working tirelessly" to provide assistance.

"May God protect people's lives," Castro added.

Videos shared by officials on social media showed rescue teams working in darkness along a rocky coastline, with small boats and stretchers.

In a post on X accompanied by photos, the Honduran armed forces said survivors with injuries were taken to a hospital in the city of San Pedro Sula by air force planes.

According to local media reports, among the dead was well-known Honduran musician Aurelio Martinez Suazo.

Suazo was a member of the Garifuna, a people of mixed indigenous and Afro-Caribbean descent originating from the island of St Vincent which has a distinct musical style.

Juan Brown does a great job breaking down the preliminary report by the Canadian TSB about the Toronto crash by the Endeavor Air pilots. I especially like his part right at the end that talks about the changes in training programs for new pilots. As Juan says, "we've lost our fundamental stick and rudder flying and training skills in favor of higher order training, glossing over basic skills." This appears to be because of the need for new pilots. So if you have a combination of a pilot who hasn't gone through the proper training, along with a captain who spent most of his time working in the flight simulator, you get accidents like this that could be avoided. As Juan says, a fundamental lack of experience in the pilot industry with an overreliance on autopilot (probably to compensate for the less than stellar pilots that get pushed through training aka DEI)

Hong Kong carriers have pledged to comply with the Civil Aviation Department’s (CAD) ban on using power banks inflight, which will take effect on April 7.

On Monday, the civil aviation regulator updated its regulations updated its regulations, barring passengers on local airlines from using power banks to charge electronic devices or other power banks on board. Additionally, power banks must not be stored in overhead luggage compartments.

The new regulations follow an incident in which a Hong Kong Airlines flight from Hangzhou, Zhejiang province to Hong Kong was forced to divert to Fuzhou in Fujian province last Thursday due to a cabin fire suspected to have been caused by a power bank.

In a statement, the department said it is “highly concerned” about recent safety incidents linked to lithium battery power banks on aircraft.

On Jan 28, a portable power bank reportedly caught fire aboard an Air Busan flight at Gimhae International Airport, South Korea, as the plane was preparing to depart for Hong Kong.

In response to media inquiries, Hong Kong Airlines, the carrier involved in last week’s emergency landing, said its existing policy already requires spare lithium batteries and external chargers to be switched off and prohibits their use inflight.

“To further enhance aviation safety, we will strictly enforce CAD’s updated regulations, which mandate that power banks be carried on-person and not placed in overhead luggage compartments,” the airline said.

Cathay Pacific Airways emphasized its commitment to aviation safety, stating it “supports measures to mitigate risks associated with lithium battery-powered devices”.

The airline added that it will work closely with regulators and “ensure clear communication of these changes to customers”, reaffirming that “safety guides every decision we make”.

HK Express, a Cathay subsidiary, said it recognizes the importance of continuously enhancing aviation safety and supports the adoption of measures that can reduce the risks associated with the use of lithium battery equipment, adding that it will announce details about the implementation of the new regulations in a timely manner.

Greater Bay Airlines noted that its current requirements on power banks comply with the International Air Transport Association’s guidelines, and the airline will update the information on the new requirements issued by the department on the company’s website.

Chaos in Washington as Langley jet is involved in a near-miss at a DC airport.

A Delta Air Lines crew reported receiving a Traffic Collision Avoidance System Resolution Advisory (TCAS RA) departing Washington-DCA on 28 March. ADS-B data received from the aircraft is also consistent with a TCAS RA. Delta flight 2983 was departing Washington for Minneapolis (MSP) when a flight of four US Air Force T-38s approached from the opposite direction at a reported barometric altitude of 800 feet (GPS altitude 875 feet). Both flights continued to their destination without incident, which was first reported by CNN.

Shortly after transitioning from the DCA tower controller to the Potomac departure controller, Delta 2983 noted that they had received a TCAS RA and queried the controller if there had been an “actual aircraft” in the vicinity, according to audio capture by LiveATC.net. The controller answered in the affirmative.

The question from the Delta crew about an “actual aircraft” may be related to the recent phantom TCAS alerts experienced by multiple aircraft near DCA in recent weeks.​

The Delta A319 continued to Minneapolis, arriving at 21:40 UTC. The T-38s returned to Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, landing around 19:51 UTC.

Roth didn’t provide any cause of the crash, only giving his perspective from what he saw in footage of the midafternoon catastrophe.

“The only thing I know by watching a video of the helicopter falling down, that the main rotor blades weren’t on the helicopter,” Roth said. “And I haven’t seen anything like that in my 30 years being in business, in the helicopter business. The only thing I could guess — I got no clue — is that it either had a bird strike or the main rotor blades failed. I have no clue. I don’t know.”

Terrible news, as it was a family of 5 visiting from Spain on the helicopter. I wouldn't be voluntarily going on any small aircraft for the time being.
