A Disturbance in the Force
This being the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the titanic and having had an interest since my childhood from the stories told by my mother in the 1960's and an interest also from the point of view of it having been built in the Belfast dock with the political / religious and social economic conditions of the time and the great sense of loss of this engineering feat that completely failed all those on board, and not withstanding the fact that maritime disasters great and small seem to linger in the communities long after the generation that they affected has passed whether it be small fishing villages or ports around Ireland and the world there always seems to be a sense of something unfinished, left as a shadow on their respective communities. This short play on words came about from a visit to the cinema in 1998 to see the James Cameron movie version of the titanic and the scene which paned back from the ship as it listed to the stern in the lonely waters of the north Atlantic at which point the first line came into my head and having returned home some hours later took out pen and paper and the rest flowed forth uninterrupted so here it is:
in the dead of night in her own private hell the beautiful titanic was fated to the swell
as nearby Californian saw her light assumed good hail and passed as right
as icy terror gripped her souls and life boats failing in their roles ignored the plea's and wails of those who lives would ebb as night would close and find no solice as they froze
Carpathian steered full steam ahead but distance spared not but a shred of hope to those whose ebbing cries would fade as dawn would crack the skies and daylight would bring no hope to they who proved the lie.... unsinkable.
to all those who perished in maritime disasters, may they find peace.
