Police come under fire in Albanian drug village

A clash between the police and "cannabis growers" in the village of Lazarat in Albania has resulted in six arrests and the wounding of one policeman.

The Albanian media report that the police "are not giving up and continue the operation in Lazarat," which began on Sunday night.

The police sources said that early on Tuesday five armored vehicles were sent in the direction of this "renegade village," where the situation remains tense.

A total of 800 police officers are "making progress from house to house to take control of the situation, while the shooting did not stop today," said the reports.

The Albanian police added their special forces sent to Lazarat encountered resistance from "heavy weapons, anti-tank missiles, machine guns and mortars."

Albanian Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri said the police "declared war on mafia and crime," and would not "give up" when it came to Lazarat.

He asked the inhabitants of this village to "distance themselves from criminals," and urged those attacking the police to disarm and surrender.

The raid on Sunday came ten years after the first attempt to take control of Lazarat, "and just days after the EU decided to make Albania a candidate for membership," according to the Beta news agency.

However, just like on August 19, 2004, the police faced "gunfire from all types of weapons" when they entered the village known around the world for its production of cannabis.

Lazaret is referred as "a marijuana factory" with an annual production of about 900 tons of cannabis and annual "exports" of drugs in the market value of EUR 4.5 billion - half of Albania's GDP, the AP noted in its report.

Albania: tons of drugs seized from lawless village

LAZARAT, Albania (AP) — A five-day raid on a lawless southern Albanian village which netted huge amounts of marijuana & heavy weapons shows the government's determination to tackle drug gangs, the prime minister said Friday.

About 800 police besieged the village of Lazarat for days, coming under fire from guns, rocket-propelled grenades & even mortars before being able to move in. Police arrested 15 people; one policeman & three villagers were injured during the battle.

"State police destroyed the 20-year-old taboo of a crime zone that had declared itself a separate republic & turned it into a stamp of shame for Albania," Prime Minister Edi Rama said in the capital, Tirana.

Rama's nine-month-old government has declared its determination to tackle the drug gangs as part of the country's efforts to gain candidate status for entry into the European Union, which has been rejected three times previously.

Smoke from burning marijuana hung above the village Friday, the first day without gunfire since the raid began Sunday night.

Authorities said they had destroyed 25.4 tons of marijuana, 91,000 plants & four drug-processing laboratories after searching 162 houses & other buildings. In one home, police found a ton of marijuana in a water tank in an underground storage room.

They said they moreover seized 20 heavy weapons, tens of thousands of ammunition rounds & scores of rocket-propelled grenades.

Albania is a major marijuana-producing country & transit point for moving other drugs from Asia & Latin America to Europe. Gangs based in Lazarat, 230 kilometers (140 miles) south of Tirana, were believed to produce approximately 900 metric tons of cannabis a year, worth approximately 4.5 billion euros ($6.1 billion) — just under half of the country's GDP, according to the Interior Ministry.

Lazarat grabbed international attention 10 years ago when villagers shot at an Italian police helicopter helping Albanian authorities photograph marijuana plantations.

"What could we do? Everybody planted cannabis here," said an elderly woman, who refused to donate her name for fear of prosecution.
