Possible war with Russia turns into Third world war?

Here is an article from 17.7. 2007 from the newspaper Komsomol Truth

Will America go to war with Russia?

The article is in Russian. Here's my overview:

Russian experts met at the Komsomol Truth newspaper to discuss the possibility of a future war between Russian and the United States. Die Welt also informed about their meeting. The main spokesperson was major-general Alexandr Vladimirov.

Russian experts are worried about a world conflict in the near future for control of areas with natural resources especially those with oil. According to these Russian experts, the United States have been preparing the occupation of Russian territory rich in natural resources with oil being their main focus. This American attack can come within ten years.

As they see it, Russia stands in the way of United States’ complete domination of the world, especially in Eurasia, as US seeks to acquire more control over world’s natural resources.

The long term aim of the US is to get NATO forces on Russian territory and to break away regions of the Russian Federation, especially the Caucasus, Caspian and others. The US, according to these experts, wants to achieve this with the support of the international community. The only way out for Russia is to start arming massively. Unless Russia has an adequate stockpile of both conventional and unconventional weapons, the US will be encouraged to pursue their aim to invade Russia with international consent to take over Russian natural reserves for the benefit of American companies and the government of the United States.
---------------------------------

When we take a look at the current situation, the Cold War rhetoric flying around, my question is whether the diplomatic row (the expulsions of both British and Russian diplomats started by the Litvinenko poisoning), the 'attack shield' being set up in Central Europe, could eventually lead to a situation when war erupts?

The American pathocrats, with the help of the British, are really doing everything they can. The situation seems to be deteriorating rapidly. The issue with the 'attack shield' being set up in Central Europe - missiles in Poland and a radar in the Czech Republic - is making the Russians very jumpy. And who can blame them. Recently they threatened to deploy missiles on their eastern border and to position rockets close to the Polish border and point missiles at US bases in Europe

So how could a possible scenario of a Third world war look like?

It could basically start with Russia and NATO. Because of it’s obligations, European NATO countries would be unwillingly sucked into the conflict, with maybe Britain, Poland and the Baltic states cheerleading along the way.
Russia also has an alliance – the so called ODKB - Collective Security Treaty Organization – which includes Armenia, Belorussia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tadzhikistan and Uzbekistan. Especially Belorussia would be a prominent help for Russia.

Then there is China, India and Iran who might give political support to Russia. China might in addition take advantage and occupy some strategic Russian territory. And finally we can’t forget about Israel.

The beginning of the conflict could be on a local scale and rapidly expand. As the diplomatic row intensifies, Russia can be given an ultimatum. There could be attempts to persuade Russia to accept NATO peacekeeping troops. If that fails, a massive air strike on the infrastructure and military installations could follow.

I just wanted to bring this issue up because I did not find much on the forum about a possible war with Russia and the US to see what other think about this.
But then again, the issue with Russia might be a distraction to get our attention away from something else. Or another process of transmarginal inhibition.

The Komsomol Truth newspaper is a yellow as they come. While there is definitely evidence for a conflict between the US and Russia, here they are overblowing it in a sensationalist manner, IMO.

Russian experts are worried about a world conflict in the near future for control of areas with natural resources especially those with oil. According to these Russian experts, the United States have been preparing the occupation of Russian territory rich in natural resources with oil being their main focus. This American attack can come within ten years.
Again, while there is a possibility of it, the reality is such that Russian oil reserves are being depleted. Russia still has plenty of oil reserves, and may potentially get a lot more. There is now a move to extend Russian territorial waters in Nothern seas by hundreds of square miles; this is done on the basis of the maritime convention, and takes advantage of the fact that geologically the sea bottom there is a direct continuation of the continental shelf.

But the porblem is that that oil is very expensive to develop, and all the infrastructure has to be built from scratch. Which Russia wouldn't do because of political uncertainty. To put it simply, the officials are more keen on filling up their own coffers. This is why Russia is making a lot of moves to make strategic unions with the former USSR republics on the South.

America doesn't need Russian oil from Siberia -- the oil in the Middle east is just as abundant but 3 or 4 times cheaper to obtain.

The 'oil question' is really not about who owns the black gold, but who controls it -- and is in the position to blackmail smaller political players with it. And here, Russia has been using its oil and gas resources as a means of applying political pressure on European countries, and yes, the US doesn't like it. This potentially can lead to some conflicts, but that would involve other european countries, some of which are also strong players (Germany), and is rather likely to become a complicated and protracted diplomatic game.

My impression is that this is a Russian game -- the Russian powers themselves have been whipping up this hysterical rhetoric about the possible war with the US. The real reason is that Putin is due to step away as a president next year, and they are working on setting up a smooth transition within the same power clique. This requires an image of an 'enemy', to scare the masses into accepting the plan. The conflict in Estonia served the same purpose.
