Woman dies after power company shuts off oxygen machine

An Auckland mother of four has died after her electrically-operated oxygen machine was cut off because of an unpaid power bill.

The woman, in her mid-40s, had been recently released from hospital after an ongoing illness and was dependent on the machine, which was installed in her Mangere home.

Power company Mercury Energy shut off power to the property at 2pm, and shortly afterwards the woman became faint, had difficulty breathing, and collapsed.

An ambulance was called but officers were unable to revive the woman, and she was pronounced dead within two hours of the power being cut.

A relative of the woman, Brendan Sheehan, told Radio NZ: "Someone came to the house at about 2pm yesterday. Both the deceased and her son talked to the person and they told them of the need for electricity and asked them not to turn off the electricity.

"Unfortunately, their protestations were not heard and the electricity was cut off and she passed away shortly afterwards."

The woman had complained of headaches and not being able to see after the electricity was disconnected.

He said the family was awaiting a post mortem to confirm the cause of death and the woman's husband was a "mess".

Mr Sheehan added: "It is just terrible this can happen in New Zealand."

The family are immigrants and had got into financial trouble after the woman had to give up work due to her illness, mr Sheehan said.

A Mercury Energy representative said the company sent its condolences to the family and it was now trying to reconnect the electricity.

It was attempting to establish exactly what happened and he said it was normal procedure to ask for evidence when told there was a medical reason not to turn off the supply.

The family is demanding a full investigation into the tragic incident.
This one really got my blood boiling. It's hard to imagine that a person came and spoke to the family and then still went ahead and cut the power leading to the woman's death!! And then they sent their condolences!!! Well the only thing I can do is, since this company supplies the electricity and gas to my home, I am going to look for some other company. The original story can be found here.

If I got a dollar everytime a company worried about its PR-image and not the customer... Then It should be enough to pay this sites bandwith and more :)

It does´nt have to be a "someone" from the company but if it was then It´s quite cold to shutdown a lifesupport-machine.

comments from minister Trevor Mallard about Mercury company disconnecting electricity sound completely lacking empathy, his words about his 'concern' over what had happened didn't reflect him feeling anything at all, his comment sounds disconnected from the tragedy this family has to live through, and cold-blooded:

SOE Minister Awaits Police Report On Mangere Death

State Owned Enterprises Minister Trevor Mallard told the media this afternoon that he was 'extremely concerned' about reports of the death of a Mangere woman Folole Muliaga, 44, following her power being disconnected by a contractor employed by Mercury Energy.

According to news reports Ms Muliaga, 44, was an early childhood teacher and mother of four children aged from five to 18.

Mrs Muliaga had apparently been ill for some time this year and was only recently out of hospital. According to reports Ms Muliaga relied on an electric pump for an oxygen supply.

A spokesman for the family told media organisations that the contractor was told she relied on electricity to survive but power was apparently cut off anyway.

Mr Mallard today explained to reporters that had received a brief report from Mercury Energy's parent company Mighty River Power which did not necessarily coincide with a radio transcript he had read relating to the tragedy.

"I think we have to be very careful about rushing to judgements until the Police have had their chance to weigh the evidence. It's also important to remember we have a grieving family and they need some room to grieve," was Mr Mallard's explanation when asked by a TVNZ reporter if this was a case of profits before people.

It seems to me that he is trying to pacify the people and let them forget all about this while they wait until the police have had their chance to weigh the evidence. Then after waiting for a while, hopefully the people will forget all about the incident.

Minister Mallard seems to be in on ponerization process. After all, we can all trust the representatives of the church, can't we? :(

This is another very sad example of what's really going on here on the BBM.
