Prayer of the Soul

Hi everyone,

My husband and I decided to put the "Prayer of the Soul" into a song... since we're not gifted composers, we simply replaced the words of another song that we find inspiring and we already know how to play (he on guitar and myself on flute + both of us on vocals). I've found myself singing the prayer often since we've done this... sometimes aloud, and sometimes in my head. Also, it's a way for us to "pray" together that is fun and creative. We used a song by the Argentinian musician Fito Paez called "Yo vengo a Ofrecer mi Corozon" ("I Come to Offer my Heart). I've been singing in addition to doing Laura's guided meditation. I've found that keeping this prayer "close at hand" has certainly helped me to keep my intentions focused throughout the day, as opposed to getting distracted by my programs. I just thought I would share this to see if other people have tried this or perhaps would like to....

Happy singing!

That's a beautiful song and a great idea. I really enjoyed that song, even though I don't understand the lyrics, the guitar playing was very smooth, I really enjoy classical style guitar, there's something about nylon strings that's so soothing and creates such a unique sound.

Edit:
Also, I think an important aspect as well. Are you still focusing on the meaning of the lines of the prayer while singing as well? That isn't something that should be lost if you are playing an instrument or singing. Maybe finding a way to combine it in. It would be a great challenge to focus on so many things at once.

That's a good point DanielS. I've found that singing and playing music puts me in a different state of mind. When I'm singing the prayer, it seems like the meaning of the words permeate my whole being... it goes beyond a thought; it becomes more of an awareness. It helps me to live the prayer as it becomes embedded in the many layers of my consciousness. It reminds me of tai chi a little... once your body learns it, you don't have to think about it, and more of the benefits arise with more practice. This is mostly an experiment, but we are enjoying it very much. Since we like to play music anyway, we might as well put more meaning to it. Sometimes I spontaneaously sing the prayer to an improvised melody as well. Music has such a powerful effect on me (one being quieting all the many i's and grounding me in the present), that it seems reasonable to combine music, prayer, and meditation.

musically, it sounds lovely. my husband is quite talented on the classical guitar, and it sounds wonderful with the flute...with lots of improvisation and spontaneity... we try to play/sing everyday to regroup our intentions in life, in addition to the meditations guided by Laura.
