Printing Problem

I'm not so tech savvy, so please could someone advise me on this, or send a link to the solution, so sorry......
I am unable to print out SOTT articles without going to the original source of the article. I have no problem printing anything then. I have no problem printing anything from any other website. Only solution I've found is copying text and pasteing to Text Edit, a hassle. There must be something simple I'm not doing. What happens is only the FIRST PAGE gets printed, and only the first page is 'previewed' also. This does not happen with any other web page? :-[ This is mainly only a problem when I want to print specifically SOTT articles.
I am using a Macbook, and have searched through all the 'printer settings'.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

A problem with printouts

I experience two problems with printing out SOTT articles. The first is when I print using the print icon, then the author and place etc occurs on the last printed page and in the top left corner but within the other text, so it looks garbled. This makes it next to impossible to find out later on where the article was printed and who wrote it. It has happened on several different printers and happens every time.

Another problem which occurs sometimes is that only the first page gets printed out. Has that to do with the internet connection or where might the problem be. This happens on an irregular basis.

Re: A problem with printouts

It depends on what browser you use. I know IE does the "every page after the first one is blank" thing. The print CSS is very simple, but the only browser that has ever printed every article properly for me is Firefox. I tried to make it print nicely on other browsers, but you fix one thing, and it breaks the printout on another browser.

So, for now anyway, your best bet is to copy/paste into a word processor and then print from there.

Re: A problem with printouts

Microsoft says that for security reasons, programmers are not able to change most if not all of your browser setting. This includes how a web page will print. Perhaps you may be able to correct this situation by tinkering with your browser setting. You did not say what browser you're running. Here is a link to changing Internet Explorer settings.
http://www.testdesigner.com/help/print/index.htm

If not IE, perhaps try the search parameters I used: "browser page print settings", or something like this.
Users can easily change Internet Explorer printer settings for the page margins, the header, and the footer through the Internet Explorer user interface. However, Internet Explorer and the WebBrowser control do not include methods to change these settings programmatically.
edit: Yep, Trying to make a web page compatible for every browser will drive a developer mad.

Re: A problem with printouts

Thank you to Scott and Al Today for the suggestions.

The browser I can use when printing is IE, so that explains it. I will use one of your ideas to adopt to the situation.

Yeah, that's what I figured. And that is the one browser where no matter what I did, it wouldn't print nicely - or if it printed mostly nicely, it broke printing in other browsers!! IE = Internet Evil.

I find in funny/strange that IE is one of the largest and worse. I'd love to be a bug on the wall in one of those tech meetings at microshaft. Hear what they really think.

Print a single post

Sometimes I find that I would like to print a single post from a thread, rather than printing the whole thread. Is anyone else interested in something like this? If so, is this functionality something that could be added to the forum?

I couldn't find a mod on the Simple Machines site that does this specifically, but there is a "View Single Post" mod at http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=541. Maybe that would work in a round about way (ie. view single post -> print).

Re: Print a single post

Hi Seamas,

I'll highlight your request to Mr.Scott. :)

Re: Print a single post

Hiya, just a quick reply from a relative newbie. Hope you don't mind me injecting my 2 cents! :)
Check out printwhatyoulike.com to do what you want. (Namely isolating a single post to print/save it.)
The bookmarklet link on the page above will give instructions on how to make a shortcut in your browser's bookmarks to trim a page down to print only what you'd like (as the site name implies :P ).
It's always worked well for me but if you have trouble figuring it out let me know!
