So yesterday was the voting day in Québec. A tragedy happened at the end but first, let's take a look at the results quickly.
THE ELECTION
The war was against three main parties (out of seven).
- Parti Québécois (Pauline Marois): Democratic socialism, separatist, center-left wing;
- Parti Liberal (Jean Charest): Liberalism, centrism, federalist, center-right wing;
- Coalition Avenir Québec (François Legault): Centrism, autonomism, federalist, right wing;
The battle was intense and here are the results. There are 125 districts in total.
- Parti Québécois: 54 districts, 32% of the votes
- Parti Libéral: 50 districts, 31% of the votes
- Coalition Avenir Québec: 19 districts, 27% of the votes
- Québec Solidaire: 2 districts, 6% of the votes
- Others: 0 district, 4% of the votes
The Parti Québécois barely made it. So now, for the first time in the history of Québec, we have a women as a cheif and she is separatist. Thing is she didn't get the majority though so all the things she wants to do will be seriously compromised.
The results themselves are quite suspicious but that is another story. Many people here are already willing to ask for a re-count. We'll see.
TRAGEDY
Now the major event that shocked us happened at around midnight ET while Pauline Marois was making her first speech as a PM. Near the end of it, she said she wants to make a country out of this province and she said to anglophones that their rights will remain even though she wants to push the Bill 101 (French language protection) a bit further.
Now all of a sudden, we heard an explosion behind the stage and the PM was instantly taken away by the bodyguards. Minutes after, police officers have arrested a man that apparently got inside the building with a AK-47-like rifle and managed to shoot two people. One of the two died of his injuries while the other is safe (but hurt). The madman also managed to ignite the whole building behind the center where the PM was.
The man, while walking towards the police car looked at the medias and said in French (with a strong English accent) that "English people are waking up".
Now as far as the Bill 101 is concerned, what this PM wants to do is simply to make sure that all services to the population are available in French (it's not the case, especially in Montréal). She dosen't want to restrict other languages at all but just to make sure the official language is respected for the sake of the majority who speaks French. Anglophones seems to demonize that idea. The madman may be one example.
So basically, the whole thing smells bad. First, how could a man walk around that area with explosives, a AK-47-like weapon, ignite a fire and manage to actually get behind the PM and shoot people? That is an obscure mystery and medias haven't raised the question much yet. He apparently got in by the back door but that's a one-way exit and there were supposed to be many many police officers and security guards around all building and doors. Especially since the student protestation movement, security was boosted (sounds familiar eh) but yet, that man had no problem getting there without being seen. He started a fire, went in, threw a smoke bomb and shot people.
Weird things are happening here in Québec. Especially this year. It's insane. It's the same as "war on terror" but applied in Québec. I feel that a revolution is coming.
We'll see. I'll add info as I get more.
Feel free to comment. As they say, the devil's in the details!
Peace.
