Question about inflamed tonsils

So,
I went to the clinic last week because I found my tonsils to be really inflamed and discharging mucus. Other symptoms I had were a couple of days of fever at night (I would wake up once or twice each night and find my clothes soaked in sweat) and swollen lymph nodes, just very slight sore throat, and some general, though not extreme fatigue.

When the doctor asked, what seems to be the matter today, I said, I think I have strep throat. She felt my lymph nodes and looked in my throat, and said, yep, and it's severe, and prescribed a course of antibiotics (penicillin 500mg twice a day), ibuprofen (400mg twice a day), gargling with salt water, and rest. This was even though the quick strep test came back negative (she did not take the strep test which requires a day or two to find the result). One thing which I found odd was that I had gained 9 lbs in 3 weeks. I tend not to go up and down in weight all that much, and last time I had my weight taken was on the first day of menstruation, when I usually weigh the most. I have been eating less than usual, my appetite has been less. The doctor did not think this was strange.

I have been on antibiotics for more than 4 days now and each day I have felt worse. Both sides of my tonsils are severely swollen (the uvula touches one side of the tonsils- sort of looks like this *gross alert* _http://de.academic.ru/pictures/dewiki/116/tonsillitis.jpg) as well as my lymph nodes. Actually, some of my lymph nodes (one on the nape of my neck, the ones where my jaw connects near my ears, ones near my groin) are so swollen I can actually see them, not just feel them. I guess it's sort of interesting since I really didn't know where many of them are, at least I only knew this intellectually. I don't have a fever any more, and am not extremely tired, but it is really difficult to play my instrument (I play brass instruments) which is what I do for a living. I basically haven't touched the horn in two weeks- did one gig, and the next day everything was so swollen I canceled the rest of my performances for the weekend.

I am thinking that the doctor misdiagnosed me, and that perhaps my tonsilitis is caused by a viral cause, and not a bacterial one (which is what the antibiotics are supposed to treat). I do not have health insurance (can't afford it, thanks U$A) so before I either plop down a bunch of cash (I do have a friend or two who offered to try to talk their doctor into seeing me for free/very little) or find another clinic, does anyone have any advice on questions I should ask or other treatments I should try? This is all getting rather annoying to me and a terrible time for this- I am moving out of my apartment this week (I've hardly gotten anything done with this, I've been trying to rest), I can't do my job (play my instrument), and I am really getting tired of the few things I figured I can eat (ultrabroth, organic chicken broth, soup, mashed potatoes with garlic and ghee, water, herbal tea, coconut juice, and I admit I found some "ice cream"- it is not too bad, it uses coconut milk although it is sweetened with agave syrup. The agave is the worst thing but I was going crazy for something cold and with a little more substance. I can swallow okay still so have still been taking supplements.) Everything is closed here since it is Sunday, I will try to go somewhere tomorrow.

Sorry to hear that you are suffering. Whenever I come down with an infection I try 1/2 tbs of baking soda in warm water every two hours along with extra doses of vitamin C, D3 and L-lysine.
I did a quick search to see what others recommend and saw baking soda repeatedly on the list.

Hope you feel better soon.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Salt is another thing that we used to use -- a teaspoon in a glass of warm water to gurgle with.

Get well soon!

Yes, I've been doing the salt water gargle for almost two weeks now a couple of times a day. Relieves pain although not swelling. I have been taking lots of extra Vit C and D but do not have lysine, I can look for this. I also have had baking soda in water for a couple of days, it didn't really seem to do much so I went back to straight water. I guess I can try that again.

Hope you'll get well soon, D Rusak!

Another thing that is perhaps worth checking is mononucleosis. It also has symptoms of viral disease, swollen lymphs, rapid gain in weight and serious fatigue.

Here are the symptoms of mono:

What are the symptoms of mono?

The initial symptoms of mono are

* a general lack of energy or malaise
* fatigue,
* a loss of appetite, and
* chills.

These initial symptoms can last from one to three days before the more intense symptoms of the illness begin. The more common intense symptoms include

* a severe sore throat,
* fever, and
* swollen lymph nodes (glands) in the neck area.

It is typically the severe sore throat that prompts people to contact their doctor.

Problem with mono, that after you get it once and have its antibodies, it tends to reappear in form of milder version that looks like common cold coupled with fatigue. It can also damage the liver, so if it indeed mono, perhaps doing liver functions blood test would be advisable, especially after taking so much ibuprofen.

Added: As for possible natural treatments, here is the site that lists the following herbs:

Carrageen, Bladderwrack, Kelp, Cayenne [inflammatory, so probably best not to take this one], Licorice Root, Green Walnut, Rosemary, Prickly Ash Berry, Oatstraw, Hops, Golden Seal, Ginger Root, Horsetail, Chickweed, Kumarahou, Echinacea Angust, Ginseng, Dandelion, Burdock Root, Wormwood, Sarsaparilla Root, Clove, Manuka oil.

Interestingly enough, many of the mentioned above ingredients are also part of anti-parasite treatments that help to eliminate parasites and antibodies of toxoplasmosis, for example. Toxoplasmosis infection also tends to cause the same symptoms as mono, just in much smaller percentage of the infected population (10%-20%)

Here is another site with natural remedies for mono.

Having said that, it doesn't mean that you have mono, of course, just another option.

Hope you'll feel better soon!

Another thing that can help is gargles with DMSO. Here is a relevant part from a paper:

In the area of the mouth and pharynx, acute and subacute tonsillitis and
pharyngitis were treated in a total of 119 patients.

Results: excellent in 20 cases, improvement in 72, no change in 27. Best
results were achieved after the second to fourth treatment. The effect of
DMSO on processes accompanied by edema were most impressive. Edema of
the uvula frequently disappeared within a few hours."

"To begin with, a 90 per cent highly purified DMSO solution
was administered; later on, antibiotic agents-mainly terramycin and eryth-
romycin-dissolved in 90 per cent DMSO were also applied." [DIMETHYL SULFOXIDE: A NEW CONCEPT
IN THE TREATMENT OF ENT DISEASES By Hans Asen*]

It works best when it is applied with a pure antibiotic form, but DMSO may help with the swelling. It is also anti-viral in general.

Hi Keit-

Thanks for the info about mono. I didn't really figure it was mono since I definitely had the full-blown version 10 years ago. I always have been confused on this issue since I've heard that you can't get it again, though I also have heard the opposite. My mom "had it" twice, but the doctor she had the second time said that she must have been misdiagnosed the first time. So, maybe I have a flare-up again. Sort of confusing since the first time I definitely got it from nearly working myself to death (taking 25+ credits a semester, doing two majors, practicing my instrument several hours a day, working 25 hrs a week, hardly any sleep), this time around I really have not been very busy at all, though I have had some extra stress (mostly excitement) about moving to a new city.

I'll have to see what capabilities they have at the clinic tomorrow, I am doubtful they have the full range of tests. I may have to take a friend's offer of contacting her doctor friend (which I am reluctant to bother her with- her son is recovering from a bone marrow transplant.) Perhaps they can do some tests though, I'll see when they open up tomorrow.

Thanks everyone!
