Looking for more information on this article below. Lots of people including my own family felt it, so something certainly happened.

While this earthquake was reported at the GNS website here, there is no record of it on the USGS website. Curious no?

I was wondering why it couldn't be found on USGS as well - makes you wonder why not. What could've caused a 'local' earthquake not registered by the almighty USGS? ;D

Yep, that got my curiosity as well.

I live in Auckland and we felt this one- my first one actually as I had never felt an earthquake before. There was a rumbling sound of houses shaking as it arrived and then went through our house. It continued for about 5 seconds and then everything was calm again. Out cats got afraid and ran around looking for a place to hide. Overall, I hope it was the last one I experienced as it wasn't a good feeling. You kind of feel helpless during the moment no matter how many Earthquake drills you have done.

Can it really be said that earthquakes in NZ in general are 'rare'?

A friend of mine posted on Facebook the other day saying it was the second she had felt (she's in Auckland), it was mild but she knew it was happening because all the dishes on her table were rattling flat out. I'm hoping to move home to Auckland (from Sydney) in August .....

Have come across this problem more than a few times in the last several years. USGS and it's Canadian counterpart have done this that I know of. Sometimes hear stories on other blogs and check the stories by going to CSEM _http://www.emsc-csem.org/#2

Two months ago there was a 4.0 quake in the Gulf of St Lawrence that the USGS missed, a few in the Yukon/North West Territories, and several in the North Atlantic Ridge that have been observed by myself or others-not officially noted. And USGS has a habit of knocking down 7 pointers (from other monitoring stations) down to 6's etc.
